INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HARMFUL ALGAE12 th <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Harmful Algae, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 September 2006The taxonomy of the genusProrocentrum is currently in a stateof flux. McLachlan et al. (1997)suggested reinstatement of thegeneric name Exuviella for somespecies presentl included inProrocentrum. To further explorethe taxonomy of ‘Prorocentrum’species we sequenced the nuclearencodedlarge subunit (LSU)ribosomal DNA gene of someProrocentrum species isolatedmainly from Malaysia. Molecularphylogenetic analyses revealed afew lineages which could be dividedinto several groups supported bymorphological characters such asthe presence of trichocysts, ornamentation of the periflagellararea, ornamentation of valvesurface and type of toxin.Additionally, the periflagellar area oftwo Prorocentrum species, viz. P.emarginatum and P. concavum, was studied by serial sectioning inthe TEM to examine whether thischaracter is a useful taxonomiccharacter for inferring relationship atthe species level. The platelets werelabelled according to Taylor’sscheme. The results showed thatthe platelets of the twoProrocentrum species were uniformin number, arrangement andornamentation such as flanges andcollars extending from the platelets. We conclude that additional genesequence data are needed beforethe taxonomy of Prorocentrum canbe finally settled with anyconfidence.PO.10-15Interaction effects of highirradiances and nutrientconcentrations on thecyanobacterium Nodulariaspumigena from the Baltic SeaSession: PO.10 - Ecophysiology &AutecologyM Mohlin, V Lindberg, A WulffMarine Ecology, GÖTEBORG, SwedenNodularia spumigena is one of thedominant species during thecyanobacterial blooms in the BalticSea. The blooms occur during latesummer, a period with increasedirradiances, low DIN:DIP and stablewater-column stratification. It hasbeen observed that increasingirradiance has a stimulating ratherthan an inhibitory effect on N.spumigena. Because of its ability fornitrogen fixation, a low DIN:DIPwould not be expected to negativelyaffect N. spumigena. In this studywe tested the interaction effect ofhigh irradiance (PAR andUVBR+UVAR) and differentDIN:DIP on a strain of N.spumigena. The laboratoryexperimental period was 17 daysand the cultures were kept in semicontinuousgrowth and exposed toPAR and PAR+UVBR+UVAR.Variables measured: nutrientconcentrations (PO 4 - , NO 3 - ) growth(light microscope), photosyntheticcapacity (phyto-PAM, Walz),content and composition ofphotosynthetic pigments (HPLC),phycobilin pigments(spectrophotometer), UV-absorbingcompounds (HPLC), and nodularin(HPLC). The experiment is currentlyrunning and the results will bepresented at the conference.241
