Since2002 the toxin producingCylindrospermopsis raciborskii isfrequently abundant from summerto fall in the Caernarvon/BretonSound Estuary in Louisiana, posinga potential risk of a bloom of thisspecies in that area. Recently(10/04) the species was detected inabundant biomasses in the wholeAtchafalaya Basin. Monitoring theseareas for the presence ofCylindrospermopsis is essential inassessing the potential for bloomformation. However, detection andquantification of Cylindrospermopsisis sometimes problematic,especially if individual chains lackthe characteristic terminalheterocyst.To circumvent this problem wedeveloped a real-time PCR assayfor rapid detection of the species. Inthis assay, detection of amplifiedtarget DNA requires annealing offluorescent-labelled probes,resulting in added level of specificitycompared with assays based ontraditional PCR methodology. Thissensitive technique detects evenlow densities of this speciesinstantly, allowing the creation ofreal-time species abundancedistribution maps, enablingmanagers to respond immediatelyto increases in biomass of thisharmful species and for timelynotification of possible health risksto the publicPO.13-57Summer Alexandrium catenellabloom and the impact on fishfarming, in the XI region, ChileSession: PO.13 - Regional eventsClaudio G Fuentes Grünewald, AAAguilera Belmonte, A Clément DíazPlancton Andino LTDA., CASTRO, ChileDuring the summer of 2005 and2006 a bloom of Alexandriumcatenella was observed in thenorthern inland sea of the XI region.This species is well known as aPSP producer. Unusual behaviourof caged salmon and high A.catenella abundance, more than356 cells/mL in surface waters atthe fish farm, indicated damage tothe fish gill and caused a serioussalmon kill at the site.The cells were distributed mainly inthe upper surface layer, numbersdiminishing with depth. At one sitelocated in the GuaitecasArchipelago (ca. 44º lat. South) themaximum concentration was 961cells/mL, representing 86 % of thetotal phytoplankton community. Thebloom began in December 2005,and the maximum abundance of A.catenella was observed during the2nd and 3rd week of January. At allsites with positive presence of thedinoflagellate the sea temperaturewas higher than 12.0 ºC.175

The programme hasrecognized the importance oftraining activities and theIOC/WESTPAC has conductedrelevant training courses seventimes during 1995-2003, focusingon the development of skills todetect toxic dinoflagellates andtoxins in contaminated shellfish. Thecourses have been funded by theJapanese Government. Significantachievements have ben obtainedduring these courses. However theobtained skills were sometimesabandoned because the traineesdid not have the possibility to applythem in their positions at their homecountries. We resolved that thetraining courses should beupgraded to the 'Training throughResearch (TTR)' project. Thisreformation was supported at theFifth WESTPAC Session held inNha Trang, Vietnam, in May 2005.Whereas the previous trainingcourses did not include researchactivities, the TTR programme canbe regarded as an internationalcooperative research programme.Several research groups (RGs) ondifferent scientific subjects wereestablished; the first RG on Cystmapping, the second RG on HABspecies characterization, and thethird RG on use of ELISA kit forPSP toxin detection.PO.03-07Italian observatory on water andhealthSession: PO.03 - Public healthE Funari 1 , D Mattei 1 , S Scardala 1 , LGramaccioni 21 National Institute of Health, ROME, Italy2 Ministry of Health, ROME, ItalyItaly has enforced the Europeandirectives on bathing and drinkingwaters, and the quality is generallygood. Yet, the national organisationin this area suffers fromshortcomings in: adequatemonitoring programs; lack ofintegration of institutional actors (atnational and local levels); analyticaldata not always being produced in aquality system; no integratedapproach for the surveillance ofwaterborne diseases; problems ofmanagement of data at the nationallevel (informative system).To face some of these problems, anational Observatory on water andhealth has been created.Several Italian surface waters usedfor drinking and bathing activitiesare infected by toxic cyanobacteriabelonging to the generaCylindrospermopsis, Plankthotrixand Microcystis. Most recently, inthe marine waters blooms of toxicalgae such as Ostreopsis ovatahave occurred. Such blooms havebeen associated with minor humanhealth effects following exposure tothe toxic aerosols from the algae.The Observatory activities willinclude both issues of freshwatercyanobacteria and toxic marinealgae. The informative system willcollect and elaborate data on theaspects related to human health,176
