INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HARMFUL ALGAE12 th <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Harmful Algae, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 September 2006limit of 1 mg/kg shellfish meat, notexceeding 1.2 mg/kg. A prolongedpersistence of YTXs was observedin all three areas studied. At AveiroLagoon it was possible to associatetemporary increases in YTX’scontamination with the presence inthe plankton of Protoceratium spp.and Gonyaulax spinifera, but notwith Lingulodinium polyedrum. Thisis the first report of contamination ofbivalve molluscs from Portugal withYTXs.PO.15-33Minimizing economical losseswith 'real-time' HAB surveillanceSession: PO.15 - MonitoringE Granéli, C EsplundKalmar University, KALMAR, SwedenCyanobacterial blooms coveringalmost the entire Baltic Sea is anormal feature in July-August. Forthe tourism industry at the island ofÖland, SE Sweden, the economicallosses during the summer of 2005amounted to16-21 million euros. Asremote sense satellite images havea low resolution, from the pictures ofthe blooms it looks like that allÖland beaches are covered withdecomposing algae. In reality, theseblooms rarely affect the westernside of the island. By having anintensive daily real-time surveillanceof the algal accumulation on thebeaches, with quick transfer (withinhours) of this information to thepublic, it is possible to get thetourists back, showing that onalmost all days of the two months ofblooms, most beaches are fit forbathing. The 'real-time' monitoringis be done by volunteers(pensioners, youth, camp-siteworkers, etc.) who get thenecessary training at the Universityof Kalmar. Among the skills to belearned by the volunteers areharmful algal species identificationand quantification, analyses ofcyanobacterial pigments, temperature, salinity, etc. Theresults for the pilot study (July-August) will be presented.PO.10-31Using quantification of geneexpression to investigate theinitiation phase and dynamics ofAlexandrium catenella blooms(Dinophyceae)Session: PO.10 - Ecophysiology &autecologyD Grzebyk 1 , MS Shin 1 , E Masseret 1 , MLaabir 1 , A Pastoureaud 2 , Y Collos 1 , AVaquer 11 University Montpellier 2, MONTPELLIER,France2 IFREMER, LER/LR, SÈTE, FranceInitiation is a critical phase ofharmful algal blooms that has beenoverlooked in field investigationscarried out for understanding andpredicting their occurrence, for tworeasons. First, when toxic cells aredetected in phytoplankton byconventional monitoring methods, their concentration is alreadyrelatively high (ca 100 cells/L) andenvironmental conditions are likelychanging with respect to theinitiation conditions that triggeredthe cell proliferation. Second, whena cell is observed, its physiologicalstatus remains unknown: is this cellactually in growth phase? To getcloser to the initiation period ofHAB, new tools are required whichare more sensitive, specific, andable to give information on cellactivity and proliferation dynamics. In the framework of our programinvestigating Alexandrium catenellablooms in the Thau Lagoon (FrenchMediterranean), we are developingmolecular assays to analyze geneexpression (mRNA quantity per cell)181
