INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF HARMFUL ALGAE12 th <strong>International</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> on Harmful Algae, Copenhagen, Denmark, 4-8 September 2006mooring, providing HAB focussedreal-time and time series data, hasenabled the detection of highbiomass blooms and allows furtherinsight into the roles of stratificationand advection in the development ofsuch events. Dominant periods inwind, current and temperature dataare found at inertial/ diurnalfrequencies and around 3 and 9days, demonstrating the linkbetween wind and current reversals, and changes in temperaturestructure. Currents lag windreversals by around 12 hours, withrelaxation of upwelling windsleading to poleward advection ofwarm water creating stratificationand conditions conducive to bloomformation. On a short time scaleinertial oscillations create semiretentivecirculation patterns, andenhance mixing through theintroduction of vertical shear into thewater column. Mooring data will beused to illustrate these processes.PO.07-18Going beyond nutrients: role ofenvironmental factors in shapingharmful algal blooms in estuarinewatersSession: PO.07 - Ecology andoceanographyEE Fensin 1 , BW Touchette 21 NC Division of Water Quality, RALEIGH,NC, United States of America2 Elon University, ELON, NC, United Statesof AmericaNutrient availability is oftenconsidered a major contributoryfactor in algal productivity. However, other environmental componentscan selectively displace individualspecies even under eutrophicconditions. Therefore, it isnecessary to identify othercontributory factors that promoteHABs if we are to develop betterpredictive models for bloomoccurrence and duration. This studyfocused on four potentially harmfulalgae (dinoflagellates Gyrodiniuminstriatum, Karlodinium micrum, andProrocentrum minimum, andcyanobacteria Cylindrospermopsisraciborskii) that occur in theestuaries of North Carolina, USA.Multivariate analyses wereconducted on data collectedbetween 2000 and 2005 in threetributaries (Neuse, New, andPamlico Rivers) of the Albemarle-Pamlico estuarine system. Ingeneral, G. instriatum, K. micrum, and C. raciborskii were intolerant tohigh flow conditions, as abundancesgreater than 1,000 units/ml onlyoccurred at flows less than 50 m 3 s -1 . Whereas, P. minimum abundancewas as high as 21,000 units/mL atflows greater than 230 m 3 s -1 .Prorocentrum minimum populationswere also more pronounced duringcooler temperatures, higher NOxlevels, and lower salinities. Both C.raciborskii and G. instriatum weremore prevalent during periods oflower salinities, and K. micrum wasmost abundant during warmertemperatures, higher salinities, andhigher total phytoplanktonabundances.PO.07-16The Ebro Delta coastalembayments, a GEOHAB pilotsite for the study of HABpopulation dynamicsSession: PO.07 - Ecology andoceanographyM Fernández-Tejedor 1 , LMElandaloussi 1 , E Mallat 1 , E Cañete 1 , ACaillaud 1 , P Riobo 2 , B Paz 2 , J Franco 2 ,D Ibarra 3 , A Cembella 4 , D Blasco 5 , JDiogène 11 IRTA, SANT CARLES DE LA RÀPITA,Spain2 IEO, VIGO, Spain172
