4. To propose a generic model for the evaluation of core competences that may have<br />

application <strong>in</strong> the different fields of UPM.<br />

5. To elaborate with the assistance of a specialized consultancy firm a tool for<br />

measur<strong>in</strong>g the core competences of students.<br />

6. To carry out pilot studies of the competence assessment model for each core<br />

competence <strong>in</strong> different university degrees and different educational levels.<br />

7. To develop an Internet portal to help teachers <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and assesment of core<br />

competences.<br />

The development of the Project is structured <strong>in</strong> five levels which objectives are related to<br />

the general goals of the Project (see Figure 1). Each one of these levels is divided <strong>in</strong>to<br />

different tasks.<br />

Level 1: Analysis of the treatment of core competences<br />

In this level the follow<strong>in</strong>g tasks have been carried out:<br />

� State of the art of the competence evaluation. Analysis of the methods applied by<br />

academic <strong>in</strong>stitutions and <strong>in</strong>ternational professional associations.<br />

� Analysis of the <strong>in</strong>dustry viewpo<strong>in</strong>t on core competences of UPM graduates.<br />

� Analysis of the management of competences <strong>in</strong> the different centres of UPM.<br />

� Elaboration of a summary with <strong>in</strong>formation and recommendations about the<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g and assessment of core competences at the UPM.<br />

As a result of these tasks a report has been written where the different competence<br />

evaluation strategies and the models developed by prestigious <strong>in</strong>stitutions are<br />

summarized. At the same time, this <strong>in</strong>formation has been compared to the results obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

from the analysis of the situation at UPM. This has allow us def<strong>in</strong>e the guidel<strong>in</strong>es to follow<br />

<strong>in</strong> the next level of learn<strong>in</strong>g and evaluation of competences.<br />
