Conclusion, Recommendations, Future Work<br />

Solicitations <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly ref<strong>in</strong>ed language about research (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g applications<br />

of research) <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education. We also see evidence of a trend towards <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

focus on translat<strong>in</strong>g research to practice and encourag<strong>in</strong>g wide adoption/application of<br />

the results. EEC has <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly focused on research with a quality criterion of<br />

applicability to practice. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this time, CCLI funded faculty members seek<strong>in</strong>g to apply<br />

the results of educational research <strong>in</strong> their eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and science classrooms, and <strong>in</strong><br />

2000, added a research and assessment track (which has funded 19 eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education<br />

research/assessment grants). In recent years, however, both are focus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly on<br />

the gap between research and practice. The recently archived Innovations <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>Education</strong>, Curriculum, and Infrastructure (IEECI) solicitation from EEC <strong>in</strong>cluded a<br />

research track for “how to more effectively translate successes <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education<br />

research <strong>in</strong>to widespread practice.” And the 2012 federal budget request <strong>in</strong>cludes a new<br />

program to be run out of the same division as CCLI-TUES to “[move] improved<br />

undergraduate STEM education practices to scale.”<br />
