Interpretive Results<br />

The <strong>in</strong>terpretive results are structured to allow a separate view on empathy and care.<br />

Observed Differences Between Conceptualizations of Empathy <strong>in</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Fields<br />

and Conceptualizations of Empathy <strong>in</strong> Fields Outside of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Compar<strong>in</strong>g the conceptualizations of empathy <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g literature and those found <strong>in</strong><br />

literature outside of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>ts to <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g differences <strong>in</strong> the language authors<br />

tend to use when describ<strong>in</strong>g empathy:<br />

a) Direct vs. <strong>in</strong>direct <strong>in</strong>teraction with users<br />

Conceptualizations of empathy <strong>in</strong> the literature of more traditional help<strong>in</strong>g fields tend to<br />

focus more on how empathy may be demonstrated while directly <strong>in</strong>teract<strong>in</strong>g with and<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g relationships or connections with clients or populations be<strong>in</strong>g helped, primarily<br />

through the use of empathic communication. Authors conceptualiz<strong>in</strong>g empathy <strong>in</strong> the<br />

traditional help<strong>in</strong>g professions tend to use terms such as car<strong>in</strong>g, help<strong>in</strong>g, support<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />
