considered difficult at first, thereby decreas<strong>in</strong>g the percentage of students who abandoned<br />

the subject. The feedback provided by the students has been very positive<br />

Significantly, <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g science projects <strong>in</strong> the subject had achieved not only proposed<br />

objectives but also some additional benefits have been found:<br />

• Acquisition of specialized knowledge and vocabulary and develop<strong>in</strong>g students’<br />

communication skills.<br />

• Enhanc<strong>in</strong>g public speak<strong>in</strong>g skills. Students were able to procduce highly organized<br />

and articulate speech.<br />

• Increas<strong>in</strong>g students’ attention towards the subject, as seen <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> groups who<br />

even developed projects well above expectations.<br />

• Help<strong>in</strong>g students to develop mathematical and qualitative models based on<br />

experimentation.<br />

• Development of seek<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>in</strong>formation literacy skills, s<strong>in</strong>ce, as many authors<br />

established (Barranoik, 2001; Scott & O'Sullivan, 2005), students still demonstrate<br />

several lacks when select<strong>in</strong>g search<strong>in</strong>g terms or evaluat<strong>in</strong>g the credibility or<br />

accuracy of web sites.<br />

• Increas<strong>in</strong>g student-teacher and student-student <strong>in</strong>teraction which <strong>in</strong> turn<br />

improved cooperative learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

• Stimulat<strong>in</strong>g teachers’ motivation. As it has been found that students’ degree of<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest is higher, they participate more <strong>in</strong> class and understand better what they<br />

are told. Be<strong>in</strong>g this an advantage, <strong>in</strong>novative methods have also <strong>in</strong>creased the<br />

workload of the teach<strong>in</strong>g staff so cooperation among teachers is now more<br />

necessary.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, we can conclude that this activity was successful <strong>in</strong> motivat<strong>in</strong>g students about the<br />

acquisition of general and transversal skills. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Fatimah Ali el al. (2006),<br />

organization and plann<strong>in</strong>g, oral and written communication, cooperative work, critical<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g or creativity will often mark important professional opportunities <strong>in</strong> an<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer’s career so University needs to endow students with technical as well as<br />

communication skills.<br />
