Abstract: Similar to eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education, optical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g and science is a<br />

highly <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary field rely<strong>in</strong>g on knowledge from several different<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>es and research traditions. Our prior work has <strong>in</strong>dicated that a diffusion<br />

problem exists <strong>in</strong> optics; despite the value of the result<strong>in</strong>g products and<br />

applications developed, the field is fairly unrecognizable to the general public<br />

and even other eng<strong>in</strong>eers. Photonics and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education are modern<br />

discipl<strong>in</strong>es that are develop<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependently from the discipl<strong>in</strong>es from which<br />

they have emerged. The opportunity for eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education to have some<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence on optics education seems apparent due to their shared youth. By<br />

explor<strong>in</strong>g optics education research we look for evidence of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

education’s <strong>in</strong>fluence and identify potential areas of <strong>in</strong>fluence.<br />

Introduction<br />

In the United States there are eleven degree grant<strong>in</strong>g programs <strong>in</strong> optics and photonics<br />

with degree offer<strong>in</strong>gs from the associate level through Ph.D. The first program opened <strong>in</strong><br />

1929 at the University of Rochester (Stroud 2004) followed by the University of Arizona <strong>in</strong><br />

1964 (Thomas <strong>2011</strong>); several other universities have jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the past 80 years. As a field,<br />

optics and photonics has developed from basic optics, such as design<strong>in</strong>g microscopes,<br />

telescopes and other practical lens devices to modern technology for high speed<br />

communications, laser devices such as scanners <strong>in</strong> stores, and laser mach<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to name a<br />

few. Many consumer technologies such as Blue Ray DVD players are direct results of optics<br />

and photonics <strong>in</strong>novations, while other consumer goods like cellular phones are <strong>in</strong>direct<br />

results of the same <strong>in</strong>novations. The small number of dedicated departments has not<br />

hampered <strong>in</strong>novation <strong>in</strong> optics and photonics; through contributions from foundational<br />

and contribut<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es of electrical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, physics, and the other eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and physical science areas, many significant technological feats based <strong>in</strong> optics have been<br />

achieved.<br />

Unfortunately, optics and photonics are not well known. Our prior research (Thomas<br />

<strong>2011</strong>) <strong>in</strong>dicated that graduates, faculty, and optics students have to expla<strong>in</strong> what exactly<br />

optics and photonics is about, even to other scientists and eng<strong>in</strong>eers. Homophily, with<strong>in</strong><br />

the field is another challenge for optics and photonics. Many of the optics and photonics<br />

programs trade graduates, faculty, and resources, while small, emerg<strong>in</strong>g companies born<br />

with<strong>in</strong> the optics circle. Closed conversation with<strong>in</strong> the field has limited the opportunity<br />
