Data Collection<br />

The PSVT:R and the MCT will be implemented to 300 students <strong>in</strong> 15 sections of EGR 120,<br />

<strong>in</strong> August <strong>2011</strong>. The <strong>in</strong>struments will be completed dur<strong>in</strong>g the regularly schedule class<br />

time. Each teacher will be briefed on the two tests and their adm<strong>in</strong>istration. The tests will<br />

be paper-based and timed. The teachers will be provided with written directions,<br />

describ<strong>in</strong>g the procedures for adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g the PSVT:R and MCT. The tests will be<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istered prior to any classroom <strong>in</strong>struction on 3D solid model<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Of the 300 hundred students to be tested, two from section will be <strong>in</strong>terviewed as a means<br />

of critically exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g how students constructed their 3D models. One higher perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and lower perform<strong>in</strong>g student from section, the aggregate scores from both <strong>in</strong>struments<br />

will be used as the selection criterion. Participants will be asked to review their answers<br />

on the two tests as well as describe their model<strong>in</strong>g strategies of several 3D solid models.<br />

Data Analysis<br />

Data Analysis will <strong>in</strong>volve two phases. The first phase will <strong>in</strong>volve a detailed item analysis<br />

of both <strong>in</strong>struments, to determ<strong>in</strong>e the validity. Statics to be reported for all items on both<br />

tests are: item discrim<strong>in</strong>ation, item difficulty, and item total score correlation. Overall<br />

<strong>in</strong>strument validity for the PSV:T and MCT will also be determ<strong>in</strong>ed. This <strong>in</strong>formation will<br />

be provided for the presentation.<br />

The second phase will <strong>in</strong>volve a content analysis of the students’ responses <strong>in</strong> the<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews. This data analysis process will be <strong>in</strong>ductive (Krippendorf, 2003). This<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation will not be provided for the presentation.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs/Conclusions/Recommendations<br />

As this paper is document<strong>in</strong>g research <strong>in</strong> progress, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs, conclusions, and<br />

recommendations will not be available until September <strong>2011</strong>and will be provided for the<br />

presentation.<br />
