and delete files and folders below the root work<strong>in</strong>g folder. The .java.policy file is<br />

generated us<strong>in</strong>g a platform <strong>in</strong>dependent syntax.<br />

User <strong>in</strong>terface<br />

The tool is implemented as a web navigator embedded w<strong>in</strong>dow, which is the most<br />

common way of implement<strong>in</strong>g Java applets (Figure 1). The w<strong>in</strong>dows size is set at the<br />

nowadays netbook resolution: 1024x600, this guaranties that the tool can be comfortably<br />

used <strong>in</strong> any computer.<br />

The applet w<strong>in</strong>dow is composed by two ma<strong>in</strong> panels: a viewer panel and a control panel.<br />

The user can select what to show <strong>in</strong> the viewer panel: the answer sheet templates, the<br />

exam solutions or the corrected exams. In the upper area of the control panel there is a<br />

combo box that gives access to the exam folders. When a new exam is go<strong>in</strong>g to be managed<br />

then a name for the exam is written <strong>in</strong> the combo box and after press<strong>in</strong>g the Enter key a<br />

new folder is created. Below the exam folder combo box there are four tabbed panels:<br />

1. Templates panel. The user specifies <strong>in</strong> this panel the exam data, then after<br />

press<strong>in</strong>g the button “Generate templates” an answer sheet template <strong>in</strong> JPEG format<br />

is generated for every exam model, which commonly corresponds to a question<br />

and answer option order<strong>in</strong>g. These templates are located <strong>in</strong>side the folder<br />

Templates conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the exam folder.<br />

2. Solutions panel. The solutions panel allows the user to edit the solutions<br />

provided and to activate the solutions, which is a mandatory step previous to<br />

correction. After activation a JPEG file is generated <strong>in</strong> the Solutions folder for every<br />

exam model.<br />

3. Correction panel. In the correction panel the user has to specify <strong>in</strong> which<br />

question number beg<strong>in</strong>s every exam part, the total score and how many po<strong>in</strong>ts a<br />

wrong answer subtracts to the score, both for every exam part. The “Activate<br />

criteria” button sets the specified criteria and the “Do correction” button is<br />

activated to proceed to correction.<br />

When the correction has f<strong>in</strong>ished the corrected exams are shown <strong>in</strong> the<br />

visualization panel where the user can see the highlighted answer <strong>in</strong> green when<br />

right and red when wrong (Figure 2). Four navigation buttons and an exam search<br />

utility, based on student ID number, allow controll<strong>in</strong>g the visualization of<br />

corrected exams.<br />
