optimal 'recipe' for <strong>in</strong>dustrially-sized, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) reactors which<br />

deposit th<strong>in</strong> films on polished silicon wafers, maximize utilization of the expensive and<br />

hazardous reactant (referred to as DCS), and m<strong>in</strong>imize the development and<br />

manufactur<strong>in</strong>g costs. To achieve these objectives, student teams must f<strong>in</strong>d suitable reactor<br />

<strong>in</strong>put variable values (temperatures along the reactor, flow rates for two reactants,<br />

pressure, and reaction time) that result <strong>in</strong> films of uniform thickness at the desired target<br />

value. The <strong>in</strong>structor’s learn<strong>in</strong>g objectives focus on professional development skills (e.g.,<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> teams, communication) and <strong>in</strong>tegration of core eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g science concepts<br />

(e.g., material balances, reaction k<strong>in</strong>etics, statistics).<br />

A typical student team devotes a substantial 15 - 25 hours to this complex, three-week<br />

project. A summary of key project milestones and correspond<strong>in</strong>g opportunities for<br />

feedback is shown <strong>in</strong> Table 1. The feedback analysed <strong>in</strong> this paper occurs dur<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>itial<br />

coach<strong>in</strong>g session, shaded <strong>in</strong> blue. In this 20-30-m<strong>in</strong>ute meet<strong>in</strong>g, students must deliver to<br />

the coach a memorandum that specifies the values for their first run variables, a strategy<br />

for subsequent runs and experimental data evaluation, and a budget (<strong>in</strong> virtual dollars) for<br />

the entire project. This assignment places an unusual responsibility on the students,<br />

requir<strong>in</strong>g them to formulate and solve a problem that requires <strong>in</strong>tegration of prior<br />

knowledge from previous courses. In the <strong>in</strong>itial coach<strong>in</strong>g session, the coach acts as a<br />

mentor or boss would <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry. The coach asks questions to guide the students <strong>in</strong><br />

further develop<strong>in</strong>g their strategy, <strong>in</strong>itial variable values, and budget. Feedback is carefully<br />

tailored to engage students <strong>in</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g gaps <strong>in</strong> their current design and direct<strong>in</strong>g<br />

attention to methods for address<strong>in</strong>g those gaps.<br />

<strong>Research</strong> Questions<br />

Us<strong>in</strong>g the episodes framework, what evidence is there that the semi-structured feedback<br />

sessions <strong>in</strong> the Virtual CVD Laboratory Project address the: student perspective of task<br />

completion, <strong>in</strong>structor <strong>in</strong>tent of knowledge <strong>in</strong>tegration, and authentic, <strong>in</strong>dustrial context of<br />

the project? Ultimately, we are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g how these elements <strong>in</strong>teract<br />

with one another to contribute to student learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
