This project is part of a larger effort which will result <strong>in</strong> an improved learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

environment for all eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g students at U-M and better support for a diverse student<br />

body. Besides the work presented here, our efforts <strong>in</strong>clude:<br />

• synthesiz<strong>in</strong>g exist<strong>in</strong>g literature about faculty teach<strong>in</strong>g practices that support a<br />

diverse student body and situat<strong>in</strong>g that literature <strong>in</strong> the U-M context us<strong>in</strong>g data<br />

from multiple sources (student demographic and academic data from the registrar<br />

and <strong>in</strong>terviews with academic advisors);<br />

• adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g a student survey and conduct<strong>in</strong>g focus groups with students at all<br />

levels of academic achievement to identify teach<strong>in</strong>g practices perceived by<br />

students to support and to h<strong>in</strong>der their success <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

• survey<strong>in</strong>g all eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g faculty at U-M and conduct<strong>in</strong>g one-on-one <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />

with some to ascerta<strong>in</strong> faculty beliefs about their own teach<strong>in</strong>g practices and about<br />

how their practices affect student learn<strong>in</strong>g and to identify factors that <strong>in</strong>fluence<br />

faculty motivation to change their teach<strong>in</strong>g practices; and<br />

• develop<strong>in</strong>g an evidence-based <strong>in</strong>stitutional plan for motivat<strong>in</strong>g change <strong>in</strong> faculty<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />

Although our work is local <strong>in</strong> context, the evidence-based approach to enabl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitutional change will serve as a model for others and will contribute to the larger body<br />
