Significance of the Study<br />

This study is situated <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>strument development and ref<strong>in</strong>ement branch of<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education research. The construction of an <strong>in</strong>strument and its rigorous test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for validity and reliability are crucially necessary precursors to quality research. This<br />

paper contributes threefold to the knowledge base: (1) mak<strong>in</strong>g transparent the process of<br />

<strong>in</strong>strument development to ultimately <strong>in</strong>crease the quality of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education<br />

research <strong>in</strong>struments, (2) simplify<strong>in</strong>g the data collection and analysis associated with the<br />

DAET, and (3) contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the assessment community a new validation of artifacts<br />

through <strong>in</strong>terviews. Additionally, this triangulation technique can be adapted to other<br />

similar tools (e.g., the Draw-a-Scientist Test; Chambers, 1983). Further research should<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>e the cod<strong>in</strong>g system <strong>in</strong> countries and cultures other than the United States.<br />
