Relationships and connections (social capital)<br />

When one considers knowledge as a collective good distributed across a community or<br />

network, then social relations and connections are a form of knowledge capital. These<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded:<br />

Participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a nationally funded research project (albeit not “eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g research”<br />

which <strong>in</strong> the national context is seen as the most important <strong>in</strong> terms of career progress).<br />

Recognition with<strong>in</strong> the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g school as do<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g related to teach<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Opportunities for members of the team to speak, correspond and share ideas with<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational colleagues <strong>in</strong> the field of EER from a range of <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>stitutions which<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded the University of North Carol<strong>in</strong>a, the School of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Education</strong> of Purdue<br />

University, Bucknell University, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Universiti Tun<br />

Husse<strong>in</strong> Onn Malaysia.<br />

Resources (structural capital)<br />

Participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a community or network gives one privileged access to certa<strong>in</strong> resources.<br />

This <strong>in</strong>cludes specific pieces of <strong>in</strong>formation, documents, tools and procedures, but also<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly networked <strong>in</strong>formation sources, tag clouds, m<strong>in</strong>dmaps, l<strong>in</strong>ks and references,<br />

search capabilities, visualization tools, and other socio-<strong>in</strong>formational structures that<br />

facilitate access to <strong>in</strong>formation. In this case the artefacts <strong>in</strong>cluded:<br />

• The LAMM <strong>in</strong>strument for classroom observation<br />

• Papers and posters (<strong>in</strong> English) produced and published <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

conferences<br />

• Power-po<strong>in</strong>t presentations (<strong>in</strong> Portuguese) produced collaboratively by team<br />

members for the <strong>in</strong>-house pedagogy sessions<br />

Collective <strong>in</strong>tangible assets: reputational capital<br />

Over time, a successful community of practice will ga<strong>in</strong> a reputation as a place where<br />

important knowledge is be<strong>in</strong>g produced. This reputation can give the community some<br />

authority <strong>in</strong> its field and a new voice <strong>in</strong> organizational contexts. Such reputation and<br />

authority <strong>in</strong> turn <strong>in</strong>creases the legitimacy of <strong>in</strong>dividual members as practitioners.<br />

Examples <strong>in</strong>cluded:<br />

• Group members <strong>in</strong>vited to speak and represent the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g school, <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />

<strong>in</strong> national and <strong>in</strong>ternational events (e.g. International Week, Quality Assurance<br />

conference);<br />

• Invitations to group members to speak at other national <strong>in</strong>stitutions;<br />
