Abstract: The Draw-an-Eng<strong>in</strong>eer Test (DAET) measures pupils’ perceptions of<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. However, DAET data collection and analysis is<br />

<strong>in</strong>efficient, rely<strong>in</strong>g heavily on associated <strong>in</strong>terview data requir<strong>in</strong>g additional<br />

time and resources. The purpose of this study is to validate a comprehensive<br />

cod<strong>in</strong>g system developed to be used as a stand-alone measure of pupils’<br />

perceptions of eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g without an accompany<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terview. Participants<br />

were pupils ages 8-11 who completed the DAET and then <strong>in</strong>terviewed. The study<br />

had three phases: (1) <strong>in</strong>terview analysis took place to identify areas for general<br />

improvement; specifically, better DAET and <strong>in</strong>terview alignment, (2) protocol<br />

implementation guidel<strong>in</strong>es established and comparable DAET questions were<br />

written for the <strong>in</strong>terview protocol to allow triangulation, and (3) cod<strong>in</strong>g results<br />

for DAETs and <strong>in</strong>terviews were compared to determ<strong>in</strong>e reliability. Draw<strong>in</strong>gs and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terviews matched 80% of the time, which provides evidence of validity for the<br />

DAET cod<strong>in</strong>g system as a stand-alone measure of pupils’ eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

perceptions.<br />

Introduction and Background<br />

The Draw-an-Eng<strong>in</strong>eer Test (DAET) is a commonly used and <strong>in</strong>tegral method to gather<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation concern<strong>in</strong>g pupils’ concepts and perceptions of eng<strong>in</strong>eers and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(e.g., Capobianco, Diefes-Dux, Mena, & Waller, <strong>2011</strong>; Fralick, Kearn, Thompson, & Lyons,<br />

2008; Oware, 2008; Weber, Duncan, Dyehouse, Strobel, & Diefes-Dux, <strong>2011</strong>). Though vital<br />

to eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education studies, particularly <strong>in</strong> primary education (children age 7-11),<br />

the DAET data collection process, as it stands now, is cumbersome because its analysis<br />

relies heavily on co-collected and analyzed <strong>in</strong>terview data and draw<strong>in</strong>gs. Such data<br />

collection requires large quantities of time and resources to provide complete <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

about each pupil’s DAET. This resource-<strong>in</strong>tensive method often leads to smaller than<br />

desirable sample sizes.<br />

Children’s draw<strong>in</strong>gs have been used <strong>in</strong> a variety of sett<strong>in</strong>gs as a means of assessment and a<br />

method of gather<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> a non-threaten<strong>in</strong>g way. Children’s draw<strong>in</strong>gs have been<br />

used as an effective pre/post assessment (Bowker, 2007; Weber, 2008) to measure<br />
