CIs. In this context, the application of modern methods of psychometrics and diagnostic<br />

model<strong>in</strong>g has the potential to determ<strong>in</strong>e the diagnostic capacity of CIs and to suggest ways<br />

to improve the CIs. Diagnostic feedback is a key component for formative use of CIs <strong>in</strong><br />

classrooms.<br />

Recommendations for Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Education</strong><br />

A substantial <strong>in</strong>structional challenge with<strong>in</strong> the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g discipl<strong>in</strong>es is to f<strong>in</strong>d practical<br />

methods for <strong>in</strong>structors to ensure that students develop deep conceptual understand<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

with<strong>in</strong> their discipl<strong>in</strong>es and to identify ready assessment methods for determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

whether students have achieved these deeper understand<strong>in</strong>gs along with necessary topic<br />

knowledge and problem solv<strong>in</strong>g expertise. CIs provide a particular type of assessment that<br />

could materially improve eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education <strong>in</strong> just these ways.<br />

A rigorous and systematic application of a framework for evaluat<strong>in</strong>g the validity of<br />

assessments <strong>in</strong>tended for classroom use has the potential to identify and guide needed<br />

improvements. Early f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs from our exam<strong>in</strong>ations of exist<strong>in</strong>g CIs clearly <strong>in</strong>dicate that<br />

CIs can benefit from standardization of methods and approaches for CI development and<br />

validation, and from application of modern psychometric methods for profil<strong>in</strong>g students’<br />

conceptual understand<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g misconceptions. Expand<strong>in</strong>g the range of CI uses to<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude formative assessment with<strong>in</strong> classes could provide a substantial improvement <strong>in</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education practice.<br />
