This would <strong>in</strong>dicate that eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g students’ understand<strong>in</strong>g of positive group<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractions, and the <strong>in</strong>tricacies of <strong>in</strong>tercultural <strong>in</strong>teraction, are <strong>in</strong>consistent with their<br />

behaviours, and is consistent with research suggest<strong>in</strong>g that subtle and unconscious<br />

behaviours ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> the status quo <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercultural contexts, particularly when people<br />

believe themselves to be egalitarian (Gaertner and Dovidio, 1986). Further analysis of the<br />

data collected is needed to confirm this prelim<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>dication, and to provide more detail<br />

on where particular <strong>in</strong>consistencies lie. This work is currently underway, and the authors<br />

aim to present further research outcomes at the time of the conference.<br />

Discussion<br />

At this early stage <strong>in</strong> the research process, there are <strong>in</strong>dications that the expected gap<br />

between espoused views and values and students’ behaviour is a significant issue for<br />

teachers <strong>in</strong> foster<strong>in</strong>g the acquisition of <strong>in</strong>tercultural competence. It rema<strong>in</strong>s to be seen<br />

whether the type of educational <strong>in</strong>terventions we have already piloted, and which we are<br />

extend<strong>in</strong>g, will have an impact on students’ <strong>in</strong>terpersonal behaviours or on their work.<br />

At a more practical level, ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formed consent from most students was not<br />

problematic for the two tutorial classes <strong>in</strong>volved, however, the researchers experienced<br />

difficulty <strong>in</strong> recruit<strong>in</strong>g students to take part <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>dividual group observations. This will<br />

be addressed <strong>in</strong> future sessions by offer<strong>in</strong>g extra tutorial assistance to participat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

groups as an <strong>in</strong>centive, rather than monetary <strong>in</strong>centives which proved expensive, yet<br />

unappeal<strong>in</strong>g to students. The paper based questionnaire will also be modified slightly to<br />

identify language barriers which may be <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g group <strong>in</strong>teractions <strong>in</strong>dependently of<br />

significant cultural differences. No modifications are required <strong>in</strong> terms of record<strong>in</strong>g group<br />

work:, the researchers found that students worked easily <strong>in</strong> front of a video camera, and<br />

did not react to its presence once their activities were underway. With these revisions, the<br />

research will be duplicated at four other <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> first and second year eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

courses.<br />
