Ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>itial understand<strong>in</strong>g of these questions will provide the authors with a basis to<br />

develop strategies for recruitment and retention of Black eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g students to NSBE,<br />

and ultimately improve retention for Blacks <strong>in</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, bridg<strong>in</strong>g the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

diversity gap <strong>in</strong> the United States.<br />

Methodology<br />

Subjects<br />

Subjects were 63 undergraduate eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g students who consented to participate. Each<br />

student is a member of the National Society of Black Eng<strong>in</strong>eers (NSBE). The distribution of<br />

the sample by class (Table 1), and gender (Table 2) is provided below. There were 15<br />

freshmen <strong>in</strong> the sample, 17 sophomores, 16 juniors and 15 seniors. The sample <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

37 males and 26 females.<br />

The LAESE (Longitud<strong>in</strong>al Assessment of Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Self-efficacy) <strong>in</strong>strument was<br />

created, tested, and validated to measure self-efficacy, <strong>in</strong>clusion, and outcome<br />

expectations by Marra and Bogue (2006). The subscales measured by the LAESE<br />

<strong>in</strong>strument are as follows:<br />
