Context maps are one tool that can be used to help assess student knowledge before,<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g, or after an eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tervention. They provide for free expression of student<br />

ideas, allow<strong>in</strong>g educators to ga<strong>in</strong> a deep understand<strong>in</strong>g of what students f<strong>in</strong>d mean<strong>in</strong>gful.<br />

Context maps are different from the traditional paper and pencil exams, which rarely<br />

allow for student creativity and flow of ideas and concepts. Us<strong>in</strong>g the Contexts of Mean<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cod<strong>in</strong>g system <strong>in</strong> conjunction with a context map assessment can provide useful<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation to educators about what and how students are learn<strong>in</strong>g, thus allow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

educators to modify their curriculum to best meet the needs of their students.<br />
