Turkish Daily News
ANKARA- Iraqi Kurds claim that over 300 people
have been killed in Kurdish-controlled northern
Iraq, during a recent crackdown on Muslim activists
by 1alal Talabani's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan
(PUK).
A spokesman for the Iraqi Kurdish Patriots Gathering
in Turkey issued a wntten statement on Thursday,
saying that Talabani's forces had massacred
members of the Islamic Movement and killed many
rivilians as well,
Describing the operation as "the most horrific and
outrageous act against the civilian population of many
towns," the spokesman, who asked to remain unidentified,
said, "The crime of these people was not that
they belonged to the Islamic Movement, but only that
they were suspected of being religious, or that their
sisters and wives covered their heads according to Islamiclaw."
Pointing out that such incidents were reminiscent of
"the days spent under Saddam's oppressions, which
were not too long ago."
The spokesman noted "the very same practices as
those ofSaddam's hack men were enforced upon innocent
civilians and members of the Islamic Movement
in places like Suaimaniya, Arbil, Kifri, Kalar,
Rawanduz, Koysinjak, Chamchamal, Betwata and Tawela."
In a statement issued on behalf of the Iraqi Kurdish
Patriots Gathering, it was stated that "Mosques were
attacked and desecrated by PUK forces and the holy
Koran was urinated upon. The rugs and carpets of these
premises were looted and shops and properties belonging
to suspected members also became targets."
Iraqi Kurds said a special execution committee for
the k~ling of prisoners and suspected members of the
Islamic Movement was set up, and identified its members
~s Kosrat Re~oul, the prime minister of Iraqi
Kurdistan a~d leadmg PUK member; Hakim Qhadir,
the deputy director of Security; Arsalan Baviz the director
of Pl!K.Irbil Headquarters, and Säfi~ Malia
Qhara, the director of Secunty for Irbi!.
All of those named were leading members
of the PUK and had allegedly received their
orders directly from Talabani. The Muslim
Kurds also claimed that Jabar Farman, a minister
for the armed forces, had ordered that
prisoners of war be killed on the spot while
he ~!lS leading the campaign against Islamic
actIVIsts.
Muslim activists compared Farman to the
"Ali hassan Majid of Bagdad, who ordered
chemical weapons to be used on Halabja in
1988 and is held responsible for the Anfal
operations against the Kurds, as well as the
massacres in Kuwait."
Noting that more than 300 had been killed
in this new campaign, the Kurds gave a list
