Inflation
soars to
71.1 %
Turkish
Daily News
AN KARA- Turkey's annual (cumulative)
consumer price Inflation rose from"a :
year-~nci 66percent in 1992 to 71.1 percent
In 1993, official figures revealed on
Tuesday. .
The coalition government's original inflation
target, as specified in the 1993 budget
proposal, was 47 percent, only 24.1
percentage points below the actua! rate.
The State Institute of Statistics (DIE)
disclosed that in December, consumer and
wholesale prices soared by 3.6 percent and
2.9 percent. respectivel)'.
Annual consumer pnce inflation in 1993
appeared to be exactly. the same as at yearend
1991 (71.1 percent).
"The coalit.ion government has eventually
brought the inflation rate back to where
they first had it,' said one journalist.
"The two-year journey has not helped at all
as regards rapid price inflation."
The.year-end rate is the highest since last
August when consumer prices soared by an
annual 71.2 percent. It is the year's third
highest, the lOp being 73.1 percent in July,
according to the DIE figures.
Annual wholesale price inflation was.
60.3 percent in 1993, compared with 6\.4
percent in 1992 and 59.2 percent in 199\.
Economists agree that rapidly widening deficits
in the public sector and loosening
monetary controls fueled inflation thr:J:.Ighout
1993.
The economy's PSBRJGNP ratio, a critical
indicator of the public sector borrowing
requirement, is expected to hover around
16 percent at year-end 1993.
The private sector contributed more to
growin~ prices than did the public sector
during 1993.
The private sector inflation rate (on a
wholes;l1e basis) was 62.5 percent, compared
to 55.2 percent in the public sector.
