SILENCED: Parliamentarian Leyla Zana (L) is continuously threatened and has survive~ an
assassination attempt. Ya~ar Kaya (R), former chairman of DEP and Zana have .remarned
silent since the Diele takeover but it is generally believed that they support the chairman.
oust him from power or to limit his politi-
.cal authority. Sources say the tension
which has surfaced within the party is
expected to reach its peak during that meeting
and could even lead to the resignation
of several deputies if nothing substantial is
'achieved.
The "moderate flank" within the DEP
believes Dicle's recent st,itements in support
of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers'
Party (PKK), and its recent attacks aime.d
at civilians, were the last straw. There IS
general awareness among the moderates,
andeven among those who elected him to
power, that Dicle's behaviour is becomin'g
Increasingly harmful to the party.
Only last week, while referring to the
PKK's Tuzla train station attack, in which
five people were killed, Diele said the
bombing was "norma]," He thus gave the
green li!!ht to the or!!anization. His refere~c.e
to this e~plosion as :'a.n attack of a
nuhtary nature,' angered nulhons of Turks.
The commonly-held belief now is that
the bombing of the DEP was in retaliation
for the Tuzla incident.
Interior Minister Nahit Mente~e was at
the top of the list of those angered by
196
Diéle. 'First, he bra'nded Diele a "traitor"
and, in response to an accusation, said he
would "not answer to traitors."
On Monday, newspapers quoted Mentese
as saying, "The PKK equals the DEP," or
rather, putting both eggs in one basket. The
minister went even further and, referring to
protection measures taken in front of this
party's buildings, said, "Even if they are
bandits we protect them. We also protect
traitors."
Orhan Dogan, ~Imak deputy of the DEP,
is among those within the p~rty ,who ~o not
in any 'way share Dlcle s views.
Interviewed by the TDN, Dogan said he
diqt'rê'f'd with "~n\' acti\'itie~ mmed ~f t~k.
ino human lives, regardless of who instigates
these activities." He added, "It is t~~s
, not important whether the targets are milItary
or civ~lian. "Mili.ta,ry or ~ivilian, we
disagree with any actlVJty agaInst human
lives.
We do not approve of such things. No
one should imagIne that we are clapping
when two or three soldiers are killed. We
don't applaud. We feel sorry, but we also
feel the same sensitivity towards the,
Kurdish youth that is being killed." '
"AlilitalY or civilian, we
do Ilot approve of these.
Orhan Dogan
celtainty.' The statements
of the chainll11n of DEP
Since ihe new yeär, secUrityforces in the
Southeast have reportedly killed at least
350 PKK militants. Recentlv, Chief of
Staff Gen. Dogan Güre~ claiméd 500 militants
were killed in the air strike on Zaleh,
in northern Iraq, But, as always, the PKK is
