ANKARA- Turkey's outlawed Kurdistan
Workers' Party (PKK) has carried out a total of
22 armed attacks in Istanbul over the past
month and a half, a newspaper close to the
organization ~ported on Moncfay.
The daily Özgur Gündem, suspected of being
affiliated with the PKK, recalled that the organization
had warned it would spread violence to
Turkish cities in retaliation for Turkish operations
in the Southeast and said about 800 villages
had recently been evacuated by troops in
the region.
According to figures revealed by PKK
sources, the organization's Kurdistan National
Liberation Front (ERNK) and Kurdistan
National Liberation Anny (ARGK) have jointly
killed six people and wounded 43 others In theIr
attacks since Jan. 1. Of the dead, five were military
cadets and the other wasa civilian.
The wounded included 21 military cadets.
five policemen, six soldiers, two officer' s wives
and nine other civilians. Following each of the
. attacks, most of which were bombings, the
PKK claimed it was retaliating against developments
in thc: Southe3st where Turkish troops
have stepped up their ~lttackson the terrorj~ts.

Gündem on Monday, separate ARGK units
were responsible for the following attacks:
Jan. f: Two "noise. bombs" were placed in a
pastry shop at the Istanbul Divan hotel and at
the entrance of the Galata tower. The ERNK
Marmara Regional lnmmillee claimed responsib

placed atthe Esenyurt NatIOnal Youth Foundation
office and caused extensive damage.
The ERNK claimed responsibility for this attack
as well.
Jan. 5: Homemade fire bombs were thrown at
two telephone booths in Taksim and Kurtulus. The
ERNK Youth Committee claimed responsibility.
Jan. 8: The Ismail Cem Guney Elementary
School in Umraniye was bombed, causing damage
but no casualties. The ERNK Marmara Regional
Committee claimed responsibility for the attack.
Jan. 13: The Nationalist Movement Party
(MHP) electoral campaign office in Maltepc
was bombed by ARGK urban guerrillas.
Jan. 22: A cafe owned by Mustafa YIldmm was
sprayed with bullets and attacked with two
grenades. Five policemen and six civilians were
wounded in the attack, which was carried out by
the ERNK Marmara Regional Committee.
Jan. 23: The Saklr Koc Traffic Control
Directorate on the Istanbul-Ankara autobahn was
sprayed with I ;Illets. There was a brief clash followlllg
the in ;ial gunfire which left one driver

Jan. 28: T'\o nOise bombs exploded in trash
cans in Taksim and at the entrance of Inonu
Boulevard. The ARGK urban guerillas claimed
responsibility.
Jan. 29: Th' Mehmetcik Lycee was bombed
leaving the sch(~)l's library building burned to the
ground. The E}::~K Mannara Regional Committee
claimed respon il:.iility.
Jan. 30: A nain highway was blocked by PKK
militants for nelïly 20 minutes near the lkitelli district
in Istanbul. After an identification check,. a
truck refusing to stop was sprayed with bullets.
The ARGK urh.l. guerillas claimed responsihilily,
Jan. 31: Two homemade fire bombs were
thrown at a Welfare Party (RP) electoral office on
Tarlaba~1 street. The ERNK Marmara Regional
Committee claimed responsibility.
Feb. 8: A fire bomb was thrown into a cafe at
Esenler. The ERNK Marmara Regional Committee
again claimed responsibility. .
Feb. 9: A time bomb exploded at the Bagctlar
PTT office killing a cleaner. The ARGK claImed
responsibility.

Feb. 10: Two noise bombs exploded at the
Erenkoy train station. The ARGK Sehit Cafer
Demirel Unit claimed responsibility. The MHP
Esenyurt building was also sprayed with bullets
and there was a brief clash with nearby security
forees.
The ARGK Mahsum Korkmaz Urban Guerilla
Unit claimed responsibility.
Feb. 12: A time bomb exploded in a trash can at
the Tuzla Irain station, killing five military cadets
and woundi,ng ~early 50 people, out of whic~ 30
were hospItalized. The ARGK MetroJ>olitan
Revenge Team claimed responsibility for the
attack. A bomb also exploded at a branch of the
Bagcilar Akbank. wounding one person.,The
ARGK Mazlum Dogan Revenge Team claimed
responsibi lity.
