ANKARA- Turkey's outlawed Kurdistan<br />

Workers' Party (PKK) has carried out a total of<br />

22 armed attacks in Istanbul over the past<br />

month and a half, a newspaper close to the<br />

organization ~ported on Moncfay.<br />

The daily Özgur Gün<strong>de</strong>m, suspected of being<br />

affiliated with the PKK, recalled that the organization<br />

had warned it would spread violence to<br />

Turkish cities in r<strong>et</strong>aliation for Turkish operations<br />

in the Southeast and said about 800 villages<br />

had recently been evacuated by troops in<br />

the region.<br />

According to figures revealed by PKK<br />

sources, the organization's Kurdistan National<br />

Liberation Front (ERNK) and Kurdistan<br />

National Liberation Anny (ARGK) have jointly<br />

killed six people and woun<strong>de</strong>d 43 others In theIr<br />

attacks since Jan. 1. Of the <strong>de</strong>ad, five were military<br />

ca<strong>de</strong>ts and the other wasa civilian.<br />

The woun<strong>de</strong>d inclu<strong>de</strong>d 21 military ca<strong>de</strong>ts.<br />

five policemen, six soldiers, two officer' s wives<br />

and nine other civilians. Following each of the<br />

. attacks, most of which were bombings, the<br />

PKK claimed it was r<strong>et</strong>aliating against <strong>de</strong>velopments<br />

in thc: Southe3st where Turkish troops<br />

have stepped up their ~lttackson the terrorj~ts.<br />

Accoraing to a list published by Ozgür<br />

Gün<strong>de</strong>m on Monday, separate ARGK units<br />

were responsible for the following attacks:<br />

Jan. f: Two "noise. bombs" were placed in a<br />

pastry shop at the Istanbul Divan hotel and at<br />

the entrance of the Galata tower. The ERNK<br />

Marmara Regional lnmmillee claimed responsib<br />

i lit y. .\ not h é r bomb was<br />

placed atthe Esenyurt NatIOnal Youth Foundation<br />

office and caused extensive damage.<br />

The ERNK claimed responsibility for this attack<br />

as well.<br />

Jan. 5: Homema<strong>de</strong> fire bombs were thrown at<br />

two telephone booths in Taksim and Kurtulus. The<br />

ERNK Youth Committee claimed responsibility.<br />

Jan. 8: The Ismail Cem Guney Elementary<br />

School in Umraniye was bombed, causing damage<br />

but no casualties. The ERNK Marmara Regional<br />

Committee claimed responsibility for the attack.<br />

Jan. 13: The Nationalist Movement Party<br />

(MHP) electoral campaign office in Maltepc<br />

was bombed by ARGK urban guerrillas.<br />

Jan. 22: A cafe owned by Mustafa YIldmm was<br />

sprayed with bull<strong>et</strong>s and attacked with two<br />

grena<strong>de</strong>s. Five policemen and six civilians were<br />

woun<strong>de</strong>d in the attack, which was carried out by<br />

the ERNK Marmara Regional Committee.<br />

Jan. 23: The Saklr Koc Traffic Control<br />

Directorate on the Istanbul-Ankara autobahn was<br />

sprayed with I ;Ill<strong>et</strong>s. There was a brief clash followlllg<br />

the in ;ial gunfire which left one driver<br />

woun<strong>de</strong>d. AR(; '( urban guerillas claimed respon-<br />

;ibility for the attack. Later, a grena<strong>de</strong> was hurled<br />

Jan. 27: TI r) cafes 111 the dIstrict of Tophane<br />

were bombed, ..long with an office of the state-run<br />

employment Igency. ARGK urban guerillas<br />

claimed respol ibility for the attack .<br />

Jan. 28: T'\o nOise bombs explo<strong>de</strong>d in trash<br />

cans in Taksim and at the entrance of Inonu<br />

Boulevard. The ARGK urban guerillas claimed<br />

responsibility.<br />

Jan. 29: Th' Mehm<strong>et</strong>cik Lycee was bombed<br />

leaving the sch(~)l's library building burned to the<br />

ground. The E}::~K Mannara Regional Committee<br />

claimed respon il:.iility.<br />

Jan. 30: A nain highway was blocked by PKK<br />

militants for nelïly 20 minutes near the lkitelli district<br />

in Istanbul. After an i<strong>de</strong>ntification check,. a<br />

truck refusing to stop was sprayed with bull<strong>et</strong>s.<br />

The ARGK urh.l. guerillas claimed responsihilily,<br />

Jan. 31: Two homema<strong>de</strong> fire bombs were<br />

thrown at a Welfare Party (RP) electoral office on<br />

Tarlaba~1 stre<strong>et</strong>. The ERNK Marmara Regional<br />

Committee claimed responsibility.<br />

Feb. 8: A fire bomb was thrown into a cafe at<br />

Esenler. The ERNK Marmara Regional Committee<br />

again claimed responsibility. .<br />

Feb. 9: A time bomb explo<strong>de</strong>d at the Bagctlar<br />

PTT office killing a cleaner. The ARGK claImed<br />

responsibility.<br />

Feb. 10: Two noise bombs explo<strong>de</strong>d at the<br />

Erenkoy train station. The ARGK Sehit Cafer<br />

Demirel Unit claimed responsibility. The MHP<br />

Esenyurt building was also sprayed with bull<strong>et</strong>s<br />

and there was a brief clash with nearby security<br />

forees.<br />

The ARGK Mahsum Korkmaz Urban Guerilla<br />

Unit claimed responsibility.<br />

Feb. 12: A time bomb explo<strong>de</strong>d in a trash can at<br />

the Tuzla Irain station, killing five military ca<strong>de</strong>ts<br />

and woundi,ng ~early 50 people, out of whic~ 30<br />

were hospItalized. The ARGK M<strong>et</strong>roJ>olitan<br />

Revenge Team claimed responsibility for the<br />

attack. A bomb also explo<strong>de</strong>d at a branch of the<br />

Bagcilar Akbank. wounding one person.,The<br />

ARGK Mazlum Dogan Revenge Team claimed<br />

responsibi lity.<br />
