. Parliament to investigate 'Southeast incidents'

ANKARA- The Turkish Parliament has decided
to investigate incidents in Southeast Turkey and to
create a special commission for the task. .
The decision was taken on Tuesday moht at the
general assembly meeting during which I ~ separate
parliamentary investigative motions were debated.
In the meeting, the coalition's junior partner Social
Democrat Peoples Party (SHP) group said that
a solution to the Southeast problem could not be
found with military methods alone and declared that
a "Kurdish problem" existed in Turkey. But the
country's Interior Minister, a member of the coalitinn's
senior partner True Path Party (DYP), insisted
tltat neither a Kurdish nor ethnic problem existed in
this country. According to Tuesday's decision, the
new invesl1gating commission is to be made up of
Il members and will work for a period of tluee
months. The commission will then prepare a report.
During the debate, Interior Minister Nahit Mentese
told Parliament that there was "no Kurdish problem
and no ethnic problem in Turkey. There is only terrorism."
Mente~e also appealed to parliamentarians
from the Kurdish-based Democracy Party (DEP) to
denounce the terrorists and condemn those who
were killing even two-year-old children.
The minister argued that the reason the separatists
killed civilians was the setback they had received
from security forces. "They are trying to say,
'We are still here,' with these activities," he said.

AN KARA- Having launched a major operation
aoainst the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK),
1trkish troops on Tuesday crossed five kilometers into
northern Iraq in hot pursuit of the militants.
Official sources said the cross-border attack was part
of an operation which started near Kato mountain in
Hakkan province and that the PKK death toll was escalating.
On Wednesday officials said 13 terrorists who attacked
the Pirinçeken border station at Çukurca on
Tuesday night were killed and troops were pursuing remaining
members of the group in Kurdish-controlled
Iraqi territorv.

said that Turkish forces were hitting precise targets
