Turkish parties to "g<strong>et</strong> rid of the old cliches<br />
and stop attacking things like imperialism<br />

He called on the PKK to avoid attempts<br />
to distance them from the "Irbil authorities"<br />

One of the interesting points of his<br />
speech was that he claimed the United<br />
States did not sueport Ankara's current policy<br />
towards Turkish Kurds.<br />

Süleyman Demirel told journalisls that<br />
RUSSianAmbassador Albert Chernishev's<br />
explanation at the Foreign Ministry on<br />

expecting a more <strong>de</strong>tailed explanation from<br />
Moscow," he said. He also stressed that terrorism<br />
was a problem which greatly disturbed<br />
Turkey and recalled that, until today,<br />
Russia was very aware of the fact.<br />
"Our people are very sensitive on this<br />
issue. An additional explanation is neces-,<br />
sary to prevent them from g<strong>et</strong>ting the<br />
impression that Russia is supporting terrorism,"<br />

ANKARA- The <strong>de</strong>cision by the pro-<br />
Kurdish Democracy Party (DEP) to withdraw<br />
from the local electlOris on March 27<br />
has turned public attention to the outlawed<br />
Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The DEP<br />
move, which amounts. to a virtual boycott of<br />
the local elections, will further complicate<br />

the situation in Southeastern Turkey where<br />
the saf<strong>et</strong>y of the polls are being questioned.<br />
Many of the candidates from the other parlies<br />
will reportedly feelloca,l pressure to<br />
withdraw.<br />
The DEP <strong>de</strong>cision to quit the elections did<br />
not come easy. The inner party oppositi~n,<br />
which was expected to concentrate Its<br />
.efforts ,to oust party chainnan Hatip Diele<br />
during three days of <strong>de</strong>liberations, in fact<br />
tried to influence the <strong>de</strong>cision on wh<strong>et</strong>her or<br />
not the party should participate in the elections.<br />
At first the advisory council of DEP<br />
convened on Jan. 23. Then the party assembly<br />
m<strong>et</strong> for two days when party officials<br />
