shortly be'announcing all the names for the
southeast region. It had already done so for
Van, Mu~, Mardin and ~anhurfa. DEP Dep- ,
ut Y Remzi Kartal claimed that hisparty was
the strongest party in the region. Kartal said,
if the elections were held In a democratic
manner, without intimidation, the DEP
would cause a major upset. "None of the
otherparties will have a chance," he said.
But he also claimed that DEP's provincial
and district organizations were under
intense pressure and that people whose
names were brought forward as potential
candidates were the subject of threats. DEP
candidates would be decided in line with
the proposals from the party's district and
provincial organizations, he said.
Kartal further claimed that the recent
change in the Election Law, which required,
thatthere be fewer polling stations in outlying
areas, would nulitate againstthe DEP.
Although the DEP does not face any difficulty
in finding candidates in the southeast,
il does have problems in other regions.
It is reportedly emphasizing the importance,
of choosing candidates of Turkish origin
for western provinces.
