between Turkey and Belgium following
clashes bet~een Turkish demonstrators
personnel of provoking the Turkish
demonstrators, the Anatolia news
agency reported on Wednesday. Violence
broke out over the weekend
when angry Turkish d.emon~trators
tried to prevent an anti-Turkish demonstratIOn
by Kurdish sympathizers
of the KurdIstan Worker's' Party
(PKK) which is outlawed in Turkey,
The Kurds had travelled from Cologne
Anatolia said Belgian Minister for
the rnterior Louis Tobback was being
blamed for the leaks concerning allegations
about. the Turkish Embassy
staff. .
It added thatthis had led to an increase
in the tension between the two
countries and said Ambassador Keskin
had told officials from the BeJgi.
an Foreign Ministry that the reactions of the members of the Turkish
commumty, which he characterized as "fully justified," were completely
their own,
Anatolia also claimed that this whole incident had led to serious differences
of opinion among members of the Belgian Cabinet and cited
Interior Minister Tobback as representing one side to the dispute with
Foreign Minister Willy Claes representing the other side.
The agency said that Tobback was coming under fire from members
of his own Cabinet for making inflammatory statements about
Turkey and the Turks and for disregarding Claes' statements aimed a,t
calming the situation.
Anatolia also referred to claims that security officials attached to
Tobback's ministry were also criticizing the minister
"radicalleftist" in Belgium, according to the agency.
who is seen as a
It pointed to allelJatlOns that Tobback, who had changed the head of
the security forces Tast year, did not look favorably on this organization.
Anatolia also reported thatthree opposition parties in Belgium were
preparing to send a motion to Parliament next week, asking for the
banning of the PKK.
It said the Walloon Liberal Party, the,Flemish Liberal Party. and
the Flemish Bloc were pointing as the violence over the weekend as a
reason for the ban.
Although Germany has banned the PKK and France has seriously
restricted its activities, Belgian officials have said there are no plans
to ban the organization in Belgium.
