students in local public schools to compete in various trade areas. Welding, HVAC, plumbing<br />

and culinary arts were some of the areas of competition.<br />

In FY <strong>2009</strong>, college representatives attended college fairs and community forums that focused on<br />

community and family issues and career and educational opportunities. Campus visits were<br />

conducted for middle and high school students and at-risk and special needs/transitional high<br />

school students, as well as students from the adult basic education programs in Wicomico and<br />

Somerset counties. In addition, an in-service activity for a local public school system was<br />

provided in their “Summer Teacher Institute for Transition Planning” program.<br />

ACCOUNTABILITY INDICATORS<br />

The data and benchmarks for the seven characteristics and 32 indicators are included with this<br />

report.<br />

Significant Cost Containment Actions<br />

COST CONTAINMENT<br />

During FY <strong>2009</strong>, the following cost containment measures were implemented:<br />

1. Purchased technology equipment with a special grant from Worcester County<br />

(savings of $250,000).<br />

2. Delayed hiring four new administrative and support staff positions (savings of<br />

$194,000).<br />

3. Implemented virtual server software on nine servers that eliminated the need to<br />

purchase 12 new servers (savings of $175,000).<br />

4. Funded nursing faculty with grant money (savings of $103,158).<br />

5. Used part-time faculty in lieu of hiring two full-time faculty members until the<br />

following fiscal year (savings of $62,000).<br />

6. Supplemented the salaries of a radiologic technology clinical instructor, office<br />

technology lab instructor, developmental lab coordinator and math lab coordinator<br />

with Perkins grant funding (savings of $61,782).<br />

7. Reduced the child development center costs with the use of an MSDE grant (savings<br />

of $57,165).<br />

8. Renovated two restrooms, two labs and 20 offices by using college employees instead<br />

of contracting the work (savings of $50,000).<br />

9. Implemented a shareware (free) software product for network reporting and added a<br />

content-filtering module to the college’s firewall (savings of $40,000).<br />

10. Supplemented the salary of a child care teacher with grant funding (savings of<br />

$40,000).<br />

11. Hired a full-time support level individual to staff the testing center instead of using<br />

part-time professionals (savings of $27,000).<br />

12. Supplemented the salaries of two instructors with a National Science Foundation<br />

grant (savings of $12,916).<br />
