FY <strong>2009</strong> Funding Issues and Cost Containment Efforts<br />

The University of Baltimore has implemented initiatives to reduce waste, improve the overall<br />

efficiency of its operation and achieve cost savings in FY <strong>2009</strong>. These initiatives include cost<br />

saving and avoidance endeavors, revenue enhancements and strategic reallocations.<br />

The university has achieved cost savings/avoidance through budget reductions, collaboration<br />

with other academic institutions, increased credit card usage, space and building efficiencies and<br />

technology initiatives. The associated savings are as follows:<br />

Collaboration on MBA with Towson University $ 903,000<br />

Utilization of credit cards for small purchases 10,000<br />

Centralize summer classes for utilities savings 10,000<br />

On line academic course schedules – elimination of printing 5,000<br />

Total Cost Savings/Avoidance $ 928,000<br />

Revenue enhancements include competitive contracts directed to student support services<br />

(bookstore, vending, reprographics), facilities rentals and leases during non-peak hours, and a<br />

partnership with Coppin State University for shuttle service. The revenue enhancements are<br />

summarized as follows:<br />

Competitive contracts (bookstore, vending, reprographics) $ 228,000<br />

Facilities rentals and leases during non-peak hours 183,000<br />

Partnership with Coppin State University (shuttle bus rental) 30,000<br />

Total Revenue Enhancements $ 441,000<br />

The University of Baltimore achieved efficiencies in FY <strong>2009</strong> through reduced waste, improved<br />

overall efficiency of its operation, and cost savings totaling $1,369,000.<br />
