Community Partnerships<br />

The college works closely with the Workforce Investment Board to assist employees<br />

impacted by the economic crisis. While the college offers services including college<br />

information sessions, career planning assistance, academic skills assessment testing,<br />

academic advising, and college enrollment assistance, the college also held mock<br />

interviews for job seekers and GED fast track classes.<br />

The College's Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Training partners with<br />

the Upper Shore Aging and Queen Anne’s County Health Department to provide a<br />

Living Well Program teaching real-life skills for living a full, healthy life with a chronic<br />

condition.<br />

To increase multicultural awareness, the college partnered with various community<br />

groups to hold the following events: Native American Month celebration (<strong>Maryland</strong><br />

Commission on Community Affairs), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast (Dorchester<br />

County NAACP). The college also held the Black History Breakfast, Campus Seder and<br />

participated in Diversity Roundtable Meeting, Disproportionate Minority Representation<br />

Meeting, and Dorchester County Minority Achievement Taskforce.<br />

Economic and Workforce Development Initiatives<br />

The College is a member of the <strong>Maryland</strong> Community College Association of Continuing<br />

Education and Training (MCCACET), which seeks to provide quality training to the<br />

business community throughout the State on a variety of topics and in a variety of<br />

formats.<br />

Chesapeake partners with the Eastern Shore Entrepreneurship Center, Inc. to offer<br />

entrepreneur training and development. Designed specifically for aspiring entrepreneurs,<br />

the FastTrac program blends research-based content with traditional classroom<br />

instruction to provide individuals with the foundation to start and build a business.<br />

Chesapeake hosts the Upper Shore Workforce Investment Board, The Upper Shore<br />

Manufacturing & Business Council, the regional Small Business Development Center<br />

and the Child Care Resource and Referral Center on its Wye Mills campus. Each of these<br />

organizations addresses the economic development and business needs of the region in<br />

partnership with the College.<br />

Under the <strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>Vol</strong>unteer Center, the college is the host site for the Chesapeake<br />

<strong>Vol</strong>unteer Center, which serves as a clearinghouse for non-profits and volunteers serving<br />

Chesapeake College's five-county service area.<br />

The college provides customized training for area employers, preparation for<br />

occupational certification, apprenticeship programs, contract courses for State and local<br />

governmental agencies, technology training and personal enrichment courses to the<br />

citizens of the Upper Shore. New occupational courses are developed to meet the need<br />

for short-term training, allowing for immediate job placement.<br />

Chesapeake partners with the Upper Shore Departments of Social Services (DSS) to<br />

provide training and services to DSS clients including basic and life skills, occupational<br />

skills preparation and Social Worker CEUs/ professional development for staff.<br />
