FY <strong>2009</strong> COST CONTAINMENT EFFORTS<br />

For Fiscal Year <strong>2009</strong>, the Bowie State University community’s efforts to reduce waste and<br />

improve overall efficiency has resulted in approximately $12,000 in cost avoidances; $865,000<br />

in cost savings; and $845,000 in strategic revenue generation. Below are lists of each of these<br />

efforts that were planned and implemented in FY <strong>2009</strong>.<br />

Changes in Cost Avoidance Initiatives<br />

Implementing Istrategy financial reporting system will create efficiencies by reducing the<br />

time that is required for the financial staff to be involved in supporting the reporting<br />

requirement of campus community. It will also save on printing cost by eliminating<br />

needless printing of hard copy reports. ($10,000)<br />

Posting the undergraduate recruitment game on web and promoted via email to boost<br />

recruitment efforts. ($2,000)<br />

Changes in Cost Saving Initiatives<br />

Implemented efforts to be an environmental conscious institution by printing marketing<br />

materials on recycle and post consumer waste paper stock. ($5,000)<br />

Reduced the need of two active landlines to one active landline in each traditional<br />

residence hall room. ($49,000)<br />

Utilized on-line faculty advertising. ($5,000)<br />

Partnered with Prince George’s County Police and <strong>Maryland</strong> State Police to provide<br />

security for various university events at no cost. ($10,000)<br />

Delayed hiring of various faculty and staff positions. ($745,000)<br />

Used graduate students in Judicial Programs. ($5,000)<br />

Installed efficient fluorescent lighting in offices and classrooms throughout the campus.<br />

($10,000)<br />

Installed new cooling tower in Martin Luther King (MLK) academic building. ($10,000)<br />

Installed new building entrance doors in MLK building and Henry Administrative<br />

building. ($6,000)<br />

Installed new roof for Thurgood Marshall Library and partial green roof for Crawford<br />

Science building. ($15,000)<br />

Posted Annual <strong>Report</strong> online and promoted via email eliminating the need to print copies.<br />

($5,000)<br />

Changes in Strategic Revenue Generation<br />

Entered into new Food Service Agreement with guaranteed additional revenue in the first<br />

year and over the next 4 years. ($845,000)<br />

BSU will continue its commitment to enhance these efforts by considering and launching other<br />

initiatives aimed at enhancing the efficiency effort in subsequent years.<br />
