OMG RFPs will soon be issued in the telecommunications, medical and<br />

financial domains.<br />

Application interfaces<br />

These are interfaces developed specifically for a given application.<br />

Because they are application-specific and because the OMG does not<br />

develop applications (only specifications), these interfaces are not<br />

standardized. However, if over time it appears that certain broadly<br />

useful services emerge out of a particular application domain, they<br />

might become candidates for future OMG standardization.<br />

CORBA 3<br />

The latest version of CORBA, CORBA 3, is built upon both the<br />

successes and shortcomings of earlier versions of CORBA. CORBA 3<br />

is divided in<strong>to</strong> three major categories:<br />

• Java and Internet integration;<br />

• Quality of service control; and<br />

• CORBA Component Model (CCM).<br />

The biggest and most anticipated change in the CORBA 3 standard<br />

is the CORBA Component Model. The introduction of CCM, along<br />

with other features such as messaging, has helped CORBA catch up<br />

<strong>to</strong> the other component frameworks. A few of the new CORBA 3<br />

specifications, as provided by OMG, are outlined below:<br />

Java and internet integration<br />

CORBA 3 provides enhanced integration with the Java language and<br />

the Internet:<br />

Java-<strong>to</strong>-IDL Mapping<br />

This mapping allows Java RMI objects <strong>to</strong> interoperate over the network<br />

as CORBA objects. They have CORBA object references and emit the<br />

HOP pro<strong>to</strong>col. New mapping defines IDL interfaces for Java objects
