240 B2B Integration — A Practical Guide to Collaborative E-commerce
DNA is COM+. COM+ has a long history originating from Microsoft's
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) framework creating COM and
then evolving from COM (and MTS) to its current form.
Windows DNA platform
One big difference between the CORBA, J2EE and Windows DNA
frameworks is that the elements of Windows DNA can be both protocol
and product based. The major elements of DNA include:
• Windows 2000 — Most Windows DNA services are now integrated
with the Windows 2000 operating system. As mentioned earlier,
Windows DNA is not platform independent.
• Internet Information Services (IIS) — IIS is Microsoft's Web server
and one of the leading Web servers in use on the Web. It is now part
of the Windows 2000 operating system.
• COMH COM+ is the component architecture for Windows. COM+
is a marriage of COM and Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS). The
COM+ framework is discussed in detail in this section.
• Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) — MSMQ provides asynchronous
messaging in the DNA environment.
• Universal Data Access (UDA) — UDA is Microsoft's latest data
access strategy that encompasses OLE DB and ActiveX Data Objects
(ADO) for accessing databases and datastores, Active Directory
Services Interfaces (ADSI) for accessing the directory services of
Windows's 2000 Active Directory and Collaborative Data Objects
(CDO) for accessing Microsoft Exchange.
Microsoft's new .NET initiative extends Windows DNA even further
by incorporating additional integration and Web services, including:
• Host Integration Server — Provides gateways to allow bi-directional
access to legacy systems, including mainframe, OS/390, OS/400 and
Unix systems from a Windows platform.
• BizTalk Server 2000 — BizTalk Server uses a message passing model
to integrate applications. It is oriented toward XML as a data format,
but can also handle other formats such as HTTP URLs and MSMQ
messages.
