has access to what application and when the user can access it. This
firewall also performs detailed activity logging. Check Point's Firewall-
1 is the most widely used application level firewall.
10.7.4. Considerations in choosing a firewall
The right selection of a firewall is of utmost importance for an enterprise,
as it is able to secure the integrity and availability of data and data
processes. It is very important to perform risk analysis before selecting
a firewall. The status of each identified risk should be further evaluated
to determine if it is still a valid risk. If the answer is yes, the firewall
chosen should eliminate it completely.
Any firewall that a company chooses has to provide the list of
features and level of performance that it has identified as mandatory.
The main considerations in deciding the type and configuration of a
company's firewall are:
• Internet Services Required — what services will be required, e.g. telnet,
World Wide Web, audio or video applications;
• Additional Features Required — whether encryption will be used;
• Integration Capabilities — how well does the firewall integrate with
other products, such as encryption tools;
• Level of Risks — how closely the information needs to be guarded,
depending on how sensitive or mission critical the information is;
and
• Budget — expenditure permissible for firewall setup and maintenance.
Although it is difficult to give exact advice, in general application
gateways are more popular firewalls, due to the level of flexibility and
control that they provide.

An enterprise firewall appliance is a hardware and/or a software device
that provides robust and comprehensive enterprise security for Internet,
intranet and extranet traffic. Its deployment and configuration, based on
