With an application level firewall, a company can control which user<br />

has access <strong>to</strong> what application and when the user can access it. This<br />

firewall also performs detailed activity logging. Check Point's Firewall-<br />

1 is the most widely used application level firewall.<br />

10.7.4. Considerations in choosing a firewall<br />

The right selection of a firewall is of utmost importance for an enterprise,<br />

as it is able <strong>to</strong> secure the integrity and availability of data and data<br />

processes. It is very important <strong>to</strong> perform risk analysis before selecting<br />

a firewall. The status of each identified risk should be further evaluated<br />

<strong>to</strong> determine if it is still a valid risk. If the answer is yes, the firewall<br />

chosen should eliminate it completely.<br />

Any firewall that a company chooses has <strong>to</strong> provide the list of<br />

features and level of performance that it has identified as manda<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

The main considerations in deciding the type and configuration of a<br />

company's firewall are:<br />

• Internet Services Required — what services will be required, e.g. telnet,<br />

World Wide Web, audio or video applications;<br />

• Additional Features Required — whether encryption will be used;<br />

• <strong>Integration</strong> Capabilities — how well does the firewall integrate with<br />

other products, such as encryption <strong>to</strong>ols;<br />

• Level of Risks — how closely the information needs <strong>to</strong> be guarded,<br />

depending on how sensitive or mission critical the information is;<br />

and<br />

• Budget — expenditure permissible for firewall setup and maintenance.<br />

Although it is difficult <strong>to</strong> give exact advice, in general application<br />

gateways are more popular firewalls, due <strong>to</strong> the level of flexibility and<br />

control that they provide.<br />

10.7.5. Enterprise firewall appliance<br />

An enterprise firewall appliance is a hardware and/or a software device<br />

that provides robust and comprehensive enterprise security for Internet,<br />

intranet and extranet traffic. Its deployment and configuration, based on
