14.8. SCM Systems<br />

A good SCM system is built on a framework that uses open technology<br />

and provides full support for industry standards, such as XML and<br />

CPFR. Such a system is flexible and interoperable with SCM systems<br />

of the trading partners. Apart from providing pre-configured functions,<br />

it also supports unique requirements of individual companies or sec<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

One of the key requirements of an SCM system is <strong>to</strong> provide easy<br />

integration with a company's internal financial management, manufacturing,<br />

cus<strong>to</strong>mer relationship management and legacy applications.<br />

The other functional specific features of an SCM system include:<br />

• Supply chain planning, demand planning, life cycle planning;<br />

• Supply chain event planning and management — for moni<strong>to</strong>ring and<br />

responding <strong>to</strong> each stage of a supply chain and taking action in a<br />

real-time mode if activities are not going as earlier planned;<br />

• Real-time collaboration and communication with suppliers and<br />

distribu<strong>to</strong>rs;<br />

• Materials management;<br />

• E-procurement;<br />

• Logistics;<br />

• Shared forecasts with suppliers;<br />

• Inven<strong>to</strong>ry planning, replenishment planning, manufacturing planning;<br />

• Full support for SCM practices, such as CPFR, VMI and collaborative<br />

order processing;<br />

• Order processing and purchasing;
