16.2.2. Juxtapose — JXTA
JXTA derives its name from the fact that peer-to-peer is juxtaposing to
client/server or Web-based computing.
JXTA is an open network platform for P2P computing. It provides a
framework and a set of protocols that standardize the way in which
peers discover, advertise network resources, communicate and cooperate
with each other to form secure peer groups. All the functions supported
by JXTA are performed by publishing and exchanging XML messages
among participating peers.
JXTA is independent of programming language. Heterogeneous digital
devices, such as PCs, servers and PDAs, and appliances with completely
different software stacks can interoperate with JXTA protocols. Moreover,
it is independent of transport protocols, such as TCP/IP and HTTP, and
can be implemented on top of them.
JXTA architecture
As depicted in the JXTA architecture figure (see Figure 16.3), JXTA is
essentially divided into three layers:
