man, lived, and died, and rose again, that he might clearly<br />

teach the precepts <strong>of</strong> virtue, and afford ^ the best motives to<br />

the practice <strong>of</strong> it, and effectually help frail man^ to conquer<br />

the desires <strong>of</strong> the flesh, and the fears <strong>of</strong> present evil, and to<br />

overcome all the temptations <strong>of</strong> this life, and thus obtain a<br />

happy immortality.<br />

So Lactantius.<br />

16. As Christ came to spread true religion all over the<br />

world, so Lactantius does'' <strong>of</strong>ten bear testimony to the great<br />

progress which the christian doctrine had then made.<br />

And he particularly says, thaf^ there had been, and then<br />

were, many Jews, who believed in Jesus.<br />

17. He has very agreeably represented"^ the fortitude and<br />

constancy <strong>of</strong> christian people, not only <strong>of</strong> men, but <strong>of</strong> women<br />

and children likewise, under the greatest sufferings for<br />

their religion.<br />
