purpose in the first book <strong>of</strong> the "Institutions.<br />

8. 1 have already several times" had occasion to take<br />

notice <strong>of</strong> these Sibylline books, and <strong>of</strong> the use which Lac-<br />

tantius, in particular, has made <strong>of</strong> them. I would add here,<br />

that Lactantius having shown what was the number <strong>of</strong> Sibyls,<br />

according? to accounts given by Varro, and several other<br />

learned heathen authors, informs us, what Sibylline books<br />

he made use <strong>of</strong> and quoted, or supposed he quoted. He<br />

says, that the volumes <strong>of</strong> the Cumsean Sibyl, containing the<br />

fates <strong>of</strong> the Roman empire, are kept secret ; but the books<br />

<strong>of</strong> the rest are open to every body. He speaks to this purpose<br />

in the Institutions, the*^ Epitome, and^ the treatise<br />

Of the Wrath <strong>of</strong> God. He says in* tjie Epitome, that all<br />

the Sibylline books, except those <strong>of</strong> the Cumcean Sibyl,<br />

teach one God, Creator, and Governor <strong>of</strong> the world. In"<br />

the Institution he seems to say the same thing <strong>of</strong> all in<br />

general, without exception, particularly the Erythraean Sibyl,<br />
