Requirements for a minor in English:
ENGL 205 Introduction to Literary Studies
Plus choose one of the following: 3 hrs.
ENGL 210 British Literature to 1600
ENGL 220 British Literature 1600 to the Present
Plus choose one of the following: 3 hrs
ENGL 230 Survey of American Literature, 1620-1865
ENGL 240 Survey of American Literature, 1865 to the Present
Plus 12 additional hours in Literature or Writing. These courses must be 300-400 level.
TOTAL: 21 Hrs.
Human and Community Services Major
The Human and Community Services major is offered by the Psychology Department. Human
and Community Services is an interdisciplinary major that helps students develop a deeper
understanding and perspective of factors that influence individuals and groups served in the
community.
Students study populations in diverse setting such as group homes, community health centers,
correctional facilities, child and adolescent service agencies, and alcoholism, drug abuse,
family violence and aging programs. Emphasis is placed on understanding, prevention and
remediation of problems experienced by populations served in these settings.
This program will prepare students to work for community-based agencies in professional
and paraprofessional positions. According to the National Organization of Human Service
(NOHS), employment opportunities in social service facilities are excellent and projected to
grow rapidly. NOHS identifies several major areas of knowledge important to the education
of professionals working in community service, including: understanding the nature of human
systems, understanding the conditions which promote or limit optimal functioning, skill in identifying,
implementing and evaluating intervention strategies, skill in selecting interventions that
are congruent with the values of those affected, and communication skills required to plan and
implement services.
Students enrolled in the Human and Community Services major at Queens will participate in
professional internships and will complete capstone projects in the Charlotte community. The
essential component of the major will enable students to make a strong connection between
theory and practice as well as study and work.
Degree
The major in Human and Community Services leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree.
