FREN 360 Issues <strong>of</strong> French Life<br />

The study <strong>of</strong> cultural, socioeconomic and political issues facing French-speaking countries as<br />

well as the historical trends which have shaped present-day society. Fall Term, odd years.<br />

FREN 370 Topics in French Studies<br />

Course designed to address a specific topic or area <strong>of</strong> French studies. Topic will be announced<br />

the semester preceding the <strong>of</strong>fering. Spring Term, every year. May be repeated with different<br />

topics. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 6 Hrs. 3-6 Hrs.<br />

FREN 372 Elementary Translating<br />

Comparative analysis <strong>of</strong> translated texts; questions <strong>of</strong> restructuring texts and adding or<br />

subtracting material; style/audience relationship; simple translations from source language to<br />

English; sight translation. Fall Term, even years. 3 Hrs.<br />

FREN 374 Advanced Translating<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional journals in the field <strong>of</strong> translation; specific problems <strong>of</strong> source/target language<br />

equivalents; expansion <strong>of</strong> working dictionaries; oral reports on work in progress; translating<br />

<strong>of</strong> substantial text(s) in field <strong>of</strong> specialization. Texts may be scientific, technical, commercial,<br />

scholarly or literary, depending on field <strong>of</strong> specialization. As needed. 3 Hrs.<br />

FREN 400 Directed Readings In French<br />

Directed study <strong>of</strong> a topic requiring the use <strong>of</strong> French-language sources. As needed. May be<br />

repeated with different topics. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 36 Hrs. 1-3 Hrs.<br />

FREN 401 Independent Practicum in French<br />

An independent study <strong>of</strong> a topic <strong>of</strong> interest to a student. Projects must require the use <strong>of</strong> the<br />

target language (French). 1, 2, or 3 hours. As needed. May be repeated with different topics.<br />

Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 36 Hrs. 1-3 Hrs.<br />

GERM 101 Elementary German I<br />

Presentation <strong>of</strong> the basic structure <strong>of</strong> the language, with emphasis on correct oral and written<br />

Review <strong>of</strong> grammar, composition and conversation, based upon readings on the culture and<br />

civilizations <strong>of</strong> German-speaking countries, as needed. 3 Hrs.<br />

Review <strong>of</strong> grammar, composition and conversation, based upon readings on the culture and<br />

civilizations <strong>of</strong> German-speaking countries. As needed. 3 Hrs.<br />

Continued study <strong>of</strong> grammar, composition and conversation, based upon readings on the<br />

culture and civilizations <strong>of</strong> German-speaking countries. As needed. 3 Hrs.<br />
