UNDERGRADUATE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS<br />
POLS 345 International Human Rights<br />
This course examines the philosophical origins <strong>of</strong> international human rights, the institutional<br />
mechanisms established to promote and protect international human rights, and the contending<br />
discourses over human rights policies between states, international agencies and governmental<br />
organizations and citizen action. Case studies include Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, China and<br />
Guatemala. Spring Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />
POLS 347 International Terrorism<br />
Examines the complexities <strong>of</strong> terrorism including its definition; reasons and sources <strong>of</strong> terrorist<br />
activity; political responses by states; legal means <strong>of</strong> addressing terrorism through international<br />
and comparative law; and the difficulties <strong>of</strong> preventing terrorism. The course also seeks to train<br />
students in international and comparative law and to examine issues <strong>of</strong> success and failure in<br />
addressing terrorism. Course structure includes readings, discussions, internet projects,<br />
in-class projects, presentations and the use <strong>of</strong> case study methods. Spring Term even years.<br />

POLS 350 Directed Study<br />
Investigation <strong>of</strong> a specialized topic in political science through research, special instruction and<br />
assigned readings. A paper and oral or written examination by staff are required. Prerequisite:<br />

POLS 425 Contemporary Chinese<br />
Politics analysis <strong>of</strong> the domestic and foreign politics <strong>of</strong> the People's Republic <strong>of</strong> China. Emphasis<br />
on modernization and political change. Prerequisite: POLS 250 or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />

POLS 450 Independent Study<br />
Opportunity for independent investigation <strong>of</strong> a topic by means <strong>of</strong> a thesis or a program <strong>of</strong> directed<br />
readings; oral examination by department members. Open to seniors with permission <strong>of</strong><br />
the department. As Needed. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 9 Hrs. 1-3 Hrs.<br />
POLS 460 Major Issues in Politics<br />
In-depth examination <strong>of</strong> a major issue through readings, major writing assignments and class<br />
discussion. Topics vary based on faculty and student interest. Possible topics include democracy,<br />
nationalism, religion and politics, women in politics, revolution, development, the world<br />
system, environmental law, international political economy, state and society. This course fulfills<br />
the writing-intensive course requirement. Prerequisite: Junior standing and 12 credit hours in<br />
political science or permission <strong>of</strong> the instructor. As needed. 3 Hrs.<br />
PSYCHOLOGY<br />
PSYC 201 General Psychology<br />
Survey <strong>of</strong> the field <strong>of</strong> psychology emphasizing the results <strong>of</strong> scientific investigations in the area<br />
<strong>of</strong> behavior. Fall Term, Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
PSYC 201L General Psychology Laboratory<br />
Introduction to techniques and procedures in psychological research. Students will conduct<br />
research in areas including learning, development, cognition, personality, perception and social<br />
behavior. This course must be taken either concurrently with or following the completion <strong>of</strong><br />
PSYC 201. Fall Term, spring every year. 1 Hr.
