Master <strong>of</strong> Education (M.Ed.) in Literacy<br />

<strong>Queens</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Charlotte</strong> has a long-standing commitment to provide educators with the<br />

skills needed to deal with the complexities <strong>of</strong> today's classroom setting. Candidates earning<br />

their licensure at <strong>Queens</strong> commit themselves to a productive career and a noble life in teaching.<br />

They recognize the vital role <strong>of</strong> the educator in guiding, nurturing, and shaping the lives <strong>of</strong><br />

children.<br />

The M.Ed. <strong>of</strong>fers North Carolina Licensure in Reading (K-12) as part <strong>of</strong> a graduate degree.<br />

The M.Ed. is designed for candidates who hold an undergraduate degree, who hold a clear<br />

teaching license in the state <strong>of</strong> North Carolina, and who have at least two years <strong>of</strong> teaching<br />

experience. The M.Ed. program consists <strong>of</strong> 33 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework, leading to an "M" level<br />

license in the state <strong>of</strong> North Carolina.<br />

ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM<br />

Application Requirements<br />

• A completed graduate application and $40 application fee<br />

• Official transcripts from each college or <strong>University</strong> attended submitted in sealed<br />

envelopes<br />

• Two letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation, one <strong>of</strong> which must come from the principal <strong>of</strong> the<br />

school in which they are employed<br />

• Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Exam.<br />

• A copy <strong>of</strong> a valid teaching license and evidence <strong>of</strong> two years teaching experience<br />

• Minimum 2.5 GPA required.<br />

International Students<br />

International students must also meet the additional requirements found on page 24.<br />

STUDENT STATUS<br />

Full Status is accorded applicants who have met all admissions requirements.<br />

Admission on Probation<br />

Students admitted on academic probation must meet the terms <strong>of</strong> probation set by their<br />

admission letter, which may vary, in order to be allowed to continue in the program.<br />

Provisional Admission<br />

Students admitted provisionally must meet the terms <strong>of</strong> full admission in order to continue in<br />

the program.<br />

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS<br />

The M.Ed. program and the North Carolina Department <strong>of</strong> Public Instruction require a wellrounded<br />

liberal arts background. In most cases the minimum general education requirements<br />

would include courses in the following areas, which must be completed before beginning the<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional internship:<br />

• Two courses in composition<br />

• One course in college mathematics<br />

• Two courses in natural sciences <strong>of</strong> which one must be a lab (Area I)<br />

• One course in fine arts (Area II)<br />

• Two courses in humanities (Area III)<br />

• Two courses in social and behavioral sciences (Area IV)<br />

• Two additional liberal arts courses from Area I-IV (they must come from<br />

different disciplines)<br />
