Recitals<br />

All students preparing recitals must be approved to present their recital as a result <strong>of</strong> a prerecital<br />

hearing no less than one month prior to the scheduled recital date. The jury for this prerecital<br />

hearing must include the applied instructor, the department chair and one other music<br />

faculty member.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Requirement<br />

All candidates for music degrees must be able to demonstrate basic piano pr<strong>of</strong>iciency to include<br />

scales, chords, prepared pieces, and if appropriate, accompaniment patterns and sight<br />

reading. Upon entering the degree program, those students unable to demonstrate such skills<br />

will be expected to fulfill specific piano requirements for their degree program as listed in the<br />

<strong>Catalog</strong>. Music Therapy degree candidates must also pass pr<strong>of</strong>iciencies in voice and guitar.<br />

All students must enroll in class studies or applied lessons in the appropriate area(s) until<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>iciency has been achieved.<br />

Instrumental performance and voice major candidates<br />

must enroll in class piano or private lessons until pr<strong>of</strong>iciency is achieved. All students must be<br />

enrolled in at least one ensemble per semester in principal instrument field.<br />

THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM<br />

Ensemble Requirement Students<br />

are required to be enrolled in one ensemble every semester, and may elect to be enrolled in<br />

more than one ensemble per semester. Large ensembles are Chorale (MUSC 187,188),<br />

Orchestra (MUSC 179,180) and Band (MUSC 177,178); small ensembles are Chamber<br />

Singers (MUSC197,198) and Small Ensemble (MUSC 185,186) for instruments and vocalists<br />

(including Wind, Guitar, Piano, Flute, Voice and others). Ensemble requirements for each <strong>of</strong> the<br />

degree programs are listed below. Regardless <strong>of</strong> when the requirements are met, students<br />

must continue to be enrolled in one ensemble each semester. Exception: Music Therapy majors<br />

are expected to be enrolled in at least one ensemble for six semesters.<br />

Specific requirements,<br />

additional fees, information and changes not listed below are contained in the Music Department<br />

Handbook. Any requirements that are part <strong>of</strong> NASM guidelines will need to be followed<br />

regardless <strong>of</strong> requirements stated in a student's freshman year <strong>Catalog</strong>.<br />

Concert attendance<br />

All degree programs require 8 semesters <strong>of</strong> concert attendance, MUSC 10, 11, 20, 21, 30,<br />

31, 40, 41.<br />
