INTS 303 Topics in International Studies<br />

A rotating topics course that would permit more in-depth studies <strong>of</strong> a topic, issue or area within<br />

international studies. Course may be repeated for credit with different topics. As needed.<br />

INTS 310 International Law<br />

This course addresses the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> international law as a discipline. It focuses on<br />

contemporary legal issues in the international arena, key principles, the role <strong>of</strong> conventions and<br />

treaties as international instruments <strong>of</strong> law, and policies <strong>of</strong> nation-states on specific subjects <strong>of</strong><br />

interest related to international law. The course utilizes readings, discussion, internet projects,<br />

in-class projects, presentations and case-study methods. Fall Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />

INTS 315 International Political Economy<br />

Examines the relationship between the state and the economy and explores the interaction <strong>of</strong><br />

power or authority and markets. Examines whether economic activity is to benefit individual<br />

consumers, promote social welfare goals or to maximize national power. Looks at specific<br />

issues such as globalization, competition among industrialized countries, economic development<br />

in poorer countries, the function <strong>of</strong> intergovernmental organizations, roles <strong>of</strong> multinational<br />

corporations and the international monetary and trade systems. Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

INTS 320 Nationalism, Culture and Conflict in Europe<br />

Ethnic identity, nationalism and nationalist conflicts, are among the most explosive forces in<br />

contemporary International Affairs. Europe has long been a center <strong>of</strong> both national conflict and<br />

efforts to transcend national conflicts. This course will examine the origins, development and<br />

consequences <strong>of</strong> nationalism and ethnic identity in Europe from the 18th century to the present.<br />

This course will treat nationalism both as a specifically political and as a cultural phenomenon.<br />

Spring Term, even years. 3 Hrs.<br />

INTS 325 Politics and Society <strong>of</strong> Ireland<br />

An examination <strong>of</strong> the various forces that have shaped modern Ireland (Northern Ireland as<br />

well as the Republic). Focus on historical, religious, geographic, cultural and political factors.<br />

Discussion <strong>of</strong> the impact <strong>of</strong> Irish emigration on the world. Analysis <strong>of</strong> contemporary issues<br />

facing Ireland (North and South). Fall Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />

INTS 340 Continuity and Change in China, Japan and Korea<br />

China, Japan and Korea (North and South today) represent East Asia. This course explores<br />

and compares the development <strong>of</strong> the political, economic, social and cultural systems <strong>of</strong> China,<br />

Japan and Korea from the 19th century; it examines the impact <strong>of</strong> western imperialism, the rise<br />

<strong>of</strong> nationalism, the development <strong>of</strong> communist movements, and the centrifugal forces <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Cold War. Emphasis on the similar and divergent developmental paths that each <strong>of</strong> the countries<br />

has followed since WW II, the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, current tensions<br />

over past Japanese aggression, the status <strong>of</strong> Taiwan, and the growing inter-regional economic<br />

relationships among these states. Extensive use <strong>of</strong> documentary films on the subject. Spring<br />

Term, odd years. 3 Hrs.<br />

INTS 350 India Past and Present<br />

This course examines the recent history, politics, society and culture <strong>of</strong> India. It will examine the<br />

impact <strong>of</strong> British colonialism, the rise Indian nationalism, the independence and partition <strong>of</strong> the<br />

sub-continent in 1947, development strategies <strong>of</strong> the post-1949 governments, ethnic and religious<br />

fault lines, the economic outlook and India's relationship with its neighbors and the United<br />

States. Fall Term, even years. 3 Hrs.<br />
