HUMAN and COMMUNITY SERVICES<br />

HCSV 101 Introduction to Community Services<br />

This course will introduce the student to historical development <strong>of</strong> the human service pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />

and the models <strong>of</strong> service delivery. Topics will include the philosophy, values, concepts,<br />

language, problems and broad scope <strong>of</strong> human services, as well as exposure to various<br />

agencies and agency policies. 3 Hrs.<br />

HCSV 306 Research Methods<br />

Introduction to research methods and statistical procedures in social science. Emphasis on<br />

mastering fundamental scientific and technological skills associated with literature review,<br />

research design, data collection, data analysis, data graphics, data interpretation and scientific<br />

writing. Particular attention to program evaluation is included. Prerequisite: PSYC 201 or Soci<br />

203 and Math 206. 3 Hrs.<br />

HCSV 306L Lab in Research Methods<br />

A laboratory course focused on design, analysis, and reporting <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> social science experiments<br />

and program evaluation. Prerequisite: PSYC 201 or Soci 203 and Math 206. 1 Hr.<br />

HCSV 350 Independent Study<br />

Independent investigation <strong>of</strong> a topic through a program <strong>of</strong> directed readings or research<br />

project. Requires prior approval <strong>of</strong> the supervising pr<strong>of</strong>essor. 1-3 Hrs.<br />

HCSV 352 Topics in Human and Community Services<br />

Investigation <strong>of</strong> a single topic or area <strong>of</strong> human and community services. The topic may vary<br />

from term to term. May be taken more than once with different subtitles. 3 Hrs.<br />

HCSV 400 Senior Seminar in Human and Community Services<br />

The capstone course <strong>of</strong> the program. The course requires the integration <strong>of</strong> the major theories<br />

and principles from each <strong>of</strong> the preceding courses so that the student creates a defining<br />

perspective <strong>of</strong> the entire program <strong>of</strong> study. Prerequisites: HCSV 101, HCSV 306 and HCSV<br />

306L. 3 Hrs.<br />

HISTORY<br />

HIST 201 Emergence <strong>of</strong> the West<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the history <strong>of</strong> civilization from the ancient world to the European crises <strong>of</strong> the seventeenth<br />

century, with emphasis upon the political, social and intellectual development <strong>of</strong> Western<br />

civilization. Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />

HIST 202 West in the World<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> the history <strong>of</strong> civilization from the end <strong>of</strong> the religious wars and the emergence <strong>of</strong><br />

the great European powers to the crises <strong>of</strong> the twentieth century and nuclear age, with emphasis<br />

generally upon the political, social and intellectual development <strong>of</strong> Western civilization.<br />

Spring Term, every year. 3 Hrs.
