BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT<br />

To serve the needs <strong>of</strong> the liberal arts student, the department <strong>of</strong>fers introductory work to<br />

enhance students’ understanding <strong>of</strong> Biology from the organismal to the molecular level.<br />

An emphasis is given to the importance <strong>of</strong> this knowledge for everyday living and decision<br />

making in a complex world.<br />

Degrees<br />

The Biology Department <strong>of</strong>fers two majors in Biology, one leading to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science<br />

degree and the second leading to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree.<br />

The major leading to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science degree consists <strong>of</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> five core<br />

courses and the choice <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> three possible tracks in general Biology, ecology or pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

studies. The general track is suited for students who wish to explore within the major,<br />

have interest in graduate school or desire to teach at the secondary level. The ecology track will<br />

allow students to focus on ecological studies, environmental issues or organismal Biology.<br />

The pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional track is designed for students interested in medicine, dentistry, veterinary<br />

medicine or allied health fields such as physicians assistant, physical therapy or other clinically<br />

related pr<strong>of</strong>essions.<br />

Careers<br />

Major study in Biology provides basic preparation leading to work in research and medical<br />

laboratories, government positions, related businesses, teaching, graduate study in Biology and<br />

related disciplines, and studies in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or other allied health<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essions.<br />

Teacher licensure<br />

Students majoring in Biology may earn licensure to teach on the secondary level (grades 9-12).<br />

Writing-intensive course requirement<br />

The writing-intensive course requirement is met with BIOL 360.<br />

Prerequisites<br />

BIOL 208 or 209 are prerequisite to all courses numbered 300 or above.<br />
