EDUC 270 Educational Technology<br />
Students will gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> the basic concepts <strong>of</strong> hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware and the<br />
uses <strong>of</strong> the computer in instructional programs by identifying, evaluating and selecting effective<br />
course ware, identifying and/or developing teaching strategies necessary to integrate course<br />
ware into the ongoing instructional program and using the computer for Computer Assisted<br />
Instruction and Computer Managed Instruction. This course fulfills the writing-intensive course<br />
requirement. Spring and Summer Terms, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 299 Exploratory Internship in Education<br />
This internship is to provide students with the opportunity to explore career options though<br />
on-side experiences in educational settings. This internship does not count toward the major.<br />
Instructor permission required. Repeatable for a total <strong>of</strong> 6 Hrs. 1-3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 300 Teaching Fellows Course<br />
This course is designed to expose students identified as North Carolina Teaching Fellows to<br />
the <strong>Charlotte</strong>-Mecklenburg School system. Students will participate in hands-on applications<br />
<strong>of</strong> education principles and community leadership. The course is designed to focus on the<br />
philosophies <strong>of</strong> teaching in North Carolina public schools, curriculum and instruction and the<br />
developmental needs <strong>of</strong> K-12 students. As needed. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 304 Classroom Management and Conflict Resolution<br />
This course <strong>of</strong>fers practical strategies relating to assessment, classroom management and<br />
instructional technologies. Specific emphasis will be placed on empirically validated practices<br />
and conflict resolution methods. Prerequisite: sophomore status or above. Spring Term, every<br />
year. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 305 Literature for Children<br />
Book selection and the integration <strong>of</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> children and books; includes evaluating<br />
types <strong>of</strong> literature and planning ways <strong>of</strong> using books with children. This course is designed<br />
primarily for education majors. As needed. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 310 Educational Psychology<br />
Study <strong>of</strong> those principles and theories <strong>of</strong> psychology that have direct application to the classroom.<br />
Emphasis will be on development, learning, motivation, classroom management and<br />
assessment. Students will participate in six field placements in which they will observe contemporary<br />
research in authentic classroom situations. Fall Term, Summer Terms, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 335 Critical Issues in Education and School Comm<br />
This course will discuss the origin, development, and current status <strong>of</strong> elementary school<br />
curriculum and evaluate the trends and issues likely to influence the curriculum in the schools.<br />
This course will also explore social, historical, political and philosophical issues that impact<br />
K-12 education nationally and internationally. Special emphasis will be placed in diversity and<br />
equality issues, leadership, parental involvement, community service and ethical advocacy.<br />
Prerequisite: Sophomore status or above. Fall Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
EDUC 345 Content Area Reading<br />
The importance <strong>of</strong> reading development in the content fields for the improvement <strong>of</strong> learning is<br />
emphasized. Topics include study skills; selection <strong>of</strong> appropriate reading materials, both functional<br />
and recreational; classroom strategies for facilitating reading comprehension; and vocabulary-building<br />
methodologies. Required for secondary teacher certification in all areas. Fall<br />
Term, every year. 3 Hrs.<br />
