The Presbyterian School <strong>of</strong> Nursing:<br />

Graduate Nursing Programs<br />

Mission<br />

The Presbyterian School <strong>of</strong> Nursing at <strong>Queens</strong> prepares nurses to meet the healthcare needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> diverse communities and to provide leadership to the pr<strong>of</strong>ession. The School <strong>of</strong> Nursing<br />

creates a dynamic learning environment that provides options for seamless progression in<br />

nursing education and serves as a community resource.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Nursing (MSN)<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Nursing (MSN) program is designed to prepare nurses as interdisciplinary,<br />

collaborative nurse leaders, and educators. Students acquire advanced knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

nursing theory, research, informatics, and health policy in addition to specialized knowledge in<br />

an academic/role “track” within the program.<br />

Integral to the program are interdisciplinary educational experiences. In Health Systems Management<br />

students have opportunities to synthesize nursing and business knowledge in diverse<br />

settings and through application <strong>of</strong> the research process. Graduates will be prepared to function<br />

as members <strong>of</strong> interdisciplinary executive level teams. In Health Ministries students have<br />

opportunities to undertake graduate studies in both nursing and seminary. Graduates will be<br />

prepared to integrate health and spiritual care in faith communities and health care organizations.<br />

In Nurse Educator Practices students learn about curriculum development, teaching<br />

strategies and methods for student and program evaluation. Graduates are prepared to teach in<br />

academic or clinical settings.<br />

In the Clinical Nurse Leader concentration, students learn to care for patients with complex<br />

conditions and work with interdisciplinary teams to improve quality outcomes and efficiency <strong>of</strong><br />

care for patient groups. Graduates are eligible to take the national certification exam for Clinical<br />

Nurse Leader<br />

ADMISSION TO THE MSN PROGRAM<br />

Those interested in the MSN program should contact the Nursing Admissions Office at 704<br />

688-2780. The following are required to be considered for admission to the MSN program:<br />

1. A completed graduate application form, including the nonrefundable $40 application fee.<br />

2. Evidence <strong>of</strong> a BSN degree from an accredited institution. RNs with other bachelor’s degrees<br />

will be considered on an individual basis.<br />

3. Evidence <strong>of</strong> a current unrestricted license to practice nursing.<br />

4. Evidence <strong>of</strong> a cumulative grade point average <strong>of</strong> at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> course work. Applicants with less than 3.0 GPA must submit GRE scores with a<br />

combined total score <strong>of</strong> 1000 or higher.<br />

5. Official transcript(s) <strong>of</strong> all post-secondary academic course work.<br />

6. Two letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation.<br />

7. A current resume including goals and objectives.<br />

8. Students in the Health Ministries track must complete the Parish Nurse Institute within the<br />

first two terms <strong>of</strong> the program. Students will have to apply to Union Seminary before taking<br />

courses in the seminary.<br />

International Students<br />

International students must also complete the admissions requirements found on page 24.<br />

Once admitted, MSN candidates may begin in any semester: Fall, Spring or Summer.<br />
