35 If a student has completed TWO courses from two areas, the student would complete one additional course from the remaining area OR take CORE 122. Examples of Queens Courses (but not limited to the following): Area One: ART 215, ENGL 300, HIST 201, HIST 202, PHIL 203, RELG 205, RELG 206. Area Two: SOCI 203, PSYC 303, ECON 203, POLS 101, POLS 201, HIST 203, HIST 204. Area Three: BIOL 100, CHEM 101, ENVR 101, ENVR 102, PHYS 101, PHIL 204, MATH 104, MATH 206, HIST 299, PSYC 201L with PSYC 201, ENGL 207, ECON 204. CORE 222: One course (3 semester hours), which is “international” in scope, e.g., World Religion, Anthropology, Macroeconomics, world-focused Political Science or History or equivalents to Queens’ offerings in the International Studies major. A student takes CORE 222 OR one of the course substitutes listed depending on the total number of credit hours transferred. 36 DEGREES All candidates for the baccalaureate degree are required to meet all degree requirements as well as the requirements for their major. Each major leads to either a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA), a Bachelor of Science degree (BS), a Bachelor of Music degree (BM), or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN). The BA degree is a liberal arts degree. It provides general knowledge in many fields and emphasizes intellectual skills such as thinking, problem solving, reasoning, and judgment. The primary goal of a liberal arts degree is not to prepare the student for a specific job but to develop an educated citizen, the traditional objective of a college education. A major for the Bachelor of Arts degree shall consist of no fewer than 30 credit hours. No more than 40 credit hours in the major department shall be required; students may, however, take more than 40 hours in a major department at their own initiative. The BS degree is more specialized than the BA, emphasizing Mathematics, science, or computer skills. Majors in Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science lead to the Bachelor of Science degree. A major for the Bachelor of Science shall consist of no fewer than 32 credit hours. The Biology department also offers a major leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The BM degree and BSN degree are more specialized. A major in Music Therapy leads to a bachelor of music degree, while a major in Nursing leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM MAJORS A bachelor’s degree requires the satisfactory completion of a major. The purpose of a major is twofold: to give the student an opportunity to achieve an appropriate level of mastery in a field of study and to enable the student to acquire knowledge, skills and perspectives which may help to make him or her effective in a career. A student will work with his or her faculty advisor to make a wise choice of a major. The following majors are offered by the College of Arts and Sciences and professional Schools of the University in the traditional Undergraduate Program: • Art History • Studio Art • Design • Biochemistry • Biology (BA) • Biology (BS) • Business Administration • Chemistry • Communication • Computer Information Systems • Foreign Languages (Dual) • Elementary Education • English • English-Drama • Environmental Science • French • History • International Studies • Mathematics • Music - Instrumental Performance • Music - Vocal Performance • Music • Music Therapy • Nursing • Philosophy-Religion • Political Science • Psychology • Spanish At least 50 percent of the credit hours required for the major must be earned at Queens. In addition, the University requires a minimum grade point average in the major of 2.000 for graduation. Some majors may require a higher minimum GPA. The requirements for the majors offered are by each department or school are described in the following sections of the Catalog. Majors in Organizational Communication, Interior Design, Human and Community Services and Religion are offered only through the Hayworth College program of evening and weekend classes.
